Ellis saves the day in San Jose

If I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes, I wouldn’t have believed it. Last night the Predators rolled into San Jose on the heels of three straight losses to open a six-game road trip, where the Sharks have typically dominated. The Pacific Division leaders completely carried the play for most of the game, outshot the Preds 57-29, so it presented an easy excuse for Nashville fans to turn in and await the morning’s grizzly results.
Except they won. Somehow, someway, Dan Ellis turned aside a hailstorm of pucks long enough to give his mates a chance to tie things up in regulation, and pull out the win in overtime, 4-3.
These highlights are worth a look…
First, Jason Arnott hustled in to take advantage of a Brian Boucher bumble to get the Preds on the board in the second period, 2-1. Then in the third, Vern Fiddler scored on a high wrister that he fired as he came through traffic to even things up at 2. The euphoria was short-lived, however, as San Jose wunderkind, Devin Setoguchi, scored his second goal of the game to put the Sharks back ahead, 3-2. For a while, it looked like all that valiant effort would be in vain. But a classic storm-the-net battle resulted in first J.P. Dumont, then Ryan Suter getting rebound opportunities which tied the game back up at 3 and sent it to OT.
This is the kind of thing that Sharks fans will have to get used to as their team transforms into the West Coast Red Wings; sometimes they’ll convincingly out-skate and out-shoot an opponent, but still end up on the wrong side of the scoreboard. For the Predators, the victory serves as a great reminder later on that hard work and attention to detail can lift them past even the most talented of opponents.
Rachel at What the Puck is just as flabbergasted as I was by last night’s big win. So if you’re walking around the office this morning and see a few especially weary coworkers, be sure to ask them about the game. It was well worth staying up for!
