We have a new leader in the Penalty Plus/Minus race this week, as Patrick O’Sullivan of the L.A. Kings has surged ahead of the competition to a +14 rating. Perhaps the highlight of his week was drawing three tripping penalties from the Dallas Stars in a Thursday night 3-2 road win. All three calls came while the Kings were holding the lead, and helped to keep the Stars offense in check while L.A. closed out the victory.

At the bottom end it looks like Robert Lang has joined Olli Jokinen and Brenden Morrow among the forwards who are suprisingly poor in this regard. As mentioned previously, defensemen playing heavy minutes at least have a reason why they take penalties. Offensive leaders like Lang, Jokinen and Morrow don’t have such an excuse!
Yahoo’s Puck Daddy has also discovered the Penalties Drawn phenomenon, and digs into the details as tracked by Behind the Net this morning. There is one difference between my presentation and BtN’s which is worth noting, however. When looking at only Penalties Taken or Penalties Drawn, one should really exclude coincidental penalties such as fighting majors, and 10-minute misconducts, as they don’t result in power play situations. The goal here is to find out which players are, in total, helping or hurting their team in this area.

Furious February
The Preds host 10 home games during the month of February, including two games each against the Phoenix Coyotes, St. Louis Blues and, yes, the Detroit Red Wings. For discounted Nashville Predators tickets, including steeply discounted Ticketmaster fees, to these or any other upcoming home games, take advantage of this special offer, and use the special offer code "predators".

Great stuff, as always.
I wonder what that ranking would look like as a “per total minutes of ice time” rate (that is, I wonder by how many millions of miles Jurcina would be in dead last).
