Sullivan scores twice, rest of Preds don’t do much else

In a rather poetic twist on this morning’s Tennessean article (”Steve Sullivan skates, but not much else”), Sully provided pretty much the only highlights for Nashville in a 6-2 trouncing on the road in Detroit by scoring twice; these are his first official goals since coming back from his back injury a few weeks ago:
Expect Pekka Rinne to return to the Predators net tomorrow night when the St. Louis Blues come to town. In the morning, look for an update on J.P. Dumont, who left the game in the 3rd after getting cross-checked in the back by Detroit’s Niklas Kronwall.

I wouldn’t call the hit “innocuous”, but it sure wasn’t harder than stuff that each player gives and takes a half-dozen times per game. Something sure looked like it was just waiting to give, and Kronwall’s hit got the wrong spot.
I have to give credit to the solo linesman for doing such a great job. The officiating was a little curious… Nashville got called for a couple of slashes that were just as middling as the cross-check on Dumont, and yet they didn’t call the cross-check. They called boarding on Draper (rightfully so) but ignored Hudler getting his jaw punched into the dash.
I think last night was a real good example of what frustrates players, coaches, and fans about officiating right now—it seems like it is rare that you get a CONSISTENT call of the game for all 60 minutes.

I think it was the location of the cross-check, more than anything else, that got to Dumont; it looked like it hit right above the hip pad in his pants, and below the back protection of his shoulder pads.

I hope Dumont is okay, but I have to say that was about the most innocuous cross-check I’ve ever seen. It looked like Kronwall barely touched him.
However, having suffered with a bad back most of my life, it was heart-wrenching to watch J.P. “coast” over to the bench. Even Wing’s color commentator Mickey Redmond sounded a bit shaken by Dumont’s slow-mo skate-off. Kudos to the refs for not calling the Preds for too many men on the ice on that play.
