The Sociology of Mucking & Grinding

Ryan Kennedy of the Hockey News gives us a feature on Joel Ward, the hitherto unknown winger who has found a home along side Jason Arnott and J.P. Dumont on the Nashville Predators’ top scoring line:

Ward ended up following some friends to the opposite side of the continent from Long Beach, enrolling in the University of Prince Edward Island and suiting up for the Panthers, where he was a three-time team MVP, plus a conference all-star and CIS All-Canadian in 2004-05. Most importantly, he was still playing hockey and at the same time earned a B.A. in sociology.

“That was what my approach was,” he said. “I was pretty happy to finish that degree off.”

Just a guess here, but I’d bet Ward is the only sociologist skating in the NHL right now!
