Pelss Signs 3 Year ELC

The Edmonton Oil Kings are still alive and well in this year’s WHL playoffs, but the Oilers have decided not to wait and to sign left winger Kristians Pelss to a 3 year deal.
Pelss was a 7th round draft 2010 draft pick who has helped take the Oil Kings to the WHL finals (which will begin Thursday night in Edmonton) with his scoring and defensive abilities. Pelss may not have led the team in scoring, but finishing 6th in points and 5th in goals on a team with as much depth and talent as the Oil Kings have is quite the accomplishment.

Oilers Well Represented at the 2012 Worlds

The Edmonton Oilers have two first overall players and a third one this summer but it is Jordan Eberle making headlines in the post season. Eblere was surely an easy pick for Team Canada and the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championships in Sweden and Finland and now that pick is paying off.

Oil Kings Streak Snapped

It was great while it lasted. More than great, it was nearly record setting but most importantly it was an Edmonton sports team garnering positive national attention.
The Edmonton Oil Kings had not lost a game since February 22nd when the team fell 6-4 to the Kootenay Ice, a streak that lasted 22 games and was enough to earn the boys mention by a Bob Mackenzie tweet. Because all of the Oil Kings are avid hockey fans with NHL dreams the tweet seemed to excite many players more than the 22nd win itself. But all of that came to an end Wednesday night when the Oil Kings dropped a 5-1 decision to the Moose Jaw Warriors.

The first concept images of the new downtown Edmonton arena have been released this week, and they look good. Structurally there doesn’t appear to be much difference between these images and the ones released last year, except for the fact that these images do not resemble a bike seat so much as a scotch tape dispenser or even a mullet. That’s right, I bring you the Smytty Dome.

Barons Advance to AHL Second Round

It wasn’t a sweep, but the Oklahoma City Barons have made short work of their series with the Houston Aeros, taking the best of five series 3-1 and will now move on to the Western Conference semifinals to face an as of yet undetermined opponent. The San Antonio Rampage, Abbotsford Heat or Milwaukee Admirals are the possible opponents, but it will most likely be the Rampage that will make the trip to Oklahoma City.

Oilers 2011-12 Season: The Good

The Edmonton Oilers’ season did not go the way that many [I] had expected, but somehow things have worked out. The team starred the season off with rookie Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scoring his first NHL goal in his first NHL game and then also the game winning shootout goal in the team’s home opener against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Nugent-Hopkins would go on to win the rookie of the month title for the month of October while netminders Nikolai Khabibulin and Devan Dubnyk would put up unreal numbers of their own and Khabibulin would be named the NHL third star of the same month. Things may have gone downhill from there, but this was a far more exciting season than years previous.

One of the fine advertisers here at Kuklas’ Korner, Budwiser Canada, not only helps to ensure that the lights are on here at KK 24 hours a day but is also running a Playoff Payoff contest that will allow you the chance to win hockey tickets for life (2 regular season tickets for 20 games per year for 50 years). The rules and entry are simple and there is no purchase necessary but you must be a resident of Canada to play, sorry my American friends.

Jordan Eberle Nominated for Lady Byng

The Edmonton Oilers will not be raising any banners earned from this season to the rafters of Rexall Place, but now two players have the possibility of raising a trophy. Last week it was announced that Ryan Nugent-Hopkins was a finalist for the Calder Trophy and now Jordan Eberle has been selected as a finalist for the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy. While the Lady Byng may not be the award midget or even junior players dream of winning it is still a prestigious award that has been handed out to a very impressive and talented list of players.

Oilers 2011-12 Season: The Ugly

I like to think of myself as an optimist. The glass is usually half full and I always hold onto the belief that things will just work out because for me, they usually do. In looking at another awful Oilers season it was easy to see what some of the positives were but in order to post that, I thought that I should first look at the bad. And yes, that was fairly easy to find as well.

Calder Nominations Announced

The Calder Trophy finalists have been announced and of course Oiler rookie Ryan Nugent-Hopkins was on the list along with Gabriel Landeskog and Adam Henrique. But that may be as far as it goes. While the Nuge was arguably the most prolific scorer of the three, those who vote argue that the games Nugent-Hopkins missed were his downfall. It’s not as though Nugent-Hopkins is frail or wouldn’t have played out the entire season if it hadn’t been for an unpredictable and completely fluke injury that was the result of skating all alone into the boards after getting caught up on a bad patch of ice.But it doesn’t matter now, Nugent-Hopkins had a much higher per game scoring rate than the other two rookies but played the fewest number of games of the three.
