Colten Teubert: ‘It’s Been a Bit of a Roller Coaster’

Looking back at this point in time and to the point of view of Oilers’ fans, the Edmonton Oilers won the trade of Dustin Penner to Los Angeles. In exchange for Penner, the Oilers received the Kings’ first round pick – #19 Oscar Klefbom - and according to Bruce McCurdy of the Edmonton Journal’s Cult of Hockey “somebody else’s partly finished project” in defenceman Colten Teubert. Teubert himself was a first round draft pick, selected 13th overall in the 2008 NHL entry draft and just 9 spots ahead of close friend and fellow teammate Jordan Eberle.

What Have You Done For Me Lately

The Edmonton Oilers certainly had a hot streak to start the 2011-12 season, but of course the team isn’t ready to keep up that kind of pace. With injuries and the numbers achieved by the goaltending duo coming back down to Earth, few Oilers maintained their offensive streaks. For example Sam Gagner went ICE cold and Ales Hemsky didn’t actually get going until the second half of the season.
When looking at the past month for both players they have proven that they are difference makers and contributors. But the problem is, can they sustain that?

Don’t Throw Items On The Ice, Unless it’s a Hat or Teddy Bear

Tuesday night in the Calgary Saddledome, fans were treated to a gift with game of a Calgary Flames re-usable bag sponsored by Telus. While gifts with game are rarely must haves, it’s still a nice touch because fans do shell out a lot of hard earned cash to attend games. Unfortunately for Flames fans, they also paid to see a loss to the Oilers.Out of frustration, these gift bags rained onto the ice as the sounds of the final buzzer filled the air.

Oilers beat the Flames 6-1
It has been a very long time coming. It was October 17th, 2008 the last time the Oilers left the Calgary Saddledome with a win in their pocket. Since that game, the Oilers have been 0-9-1 in Calgary.

Nation Radio is a two hour program on Edmonton’s Team 1260 on Saturday afternoons. The show routinely features various voices and faces from the hockey world discussing trades, prospects and statistics, but it tends to focus more on Edmonton hockey teams. I had the opportunity to talk Oilers prospects on Nation Radio this past Saturday as did the voice of the Oklahoma City Barons, Jim Byers.
You can listen to my segment here, and Jim Byer’s here. The entire show is also available on the Nation Radio posting.

The Edmonton Oilers have recalled goaltender Yann Danis from the Oklahoma City Barons of the AHL after Nikolai Khabibulin suffered a groin injury during Sunday night’s game against the Vancouver Canucks. According to the Oilers’ official twitter feed, Khabibulin is expected to miss 7-10 days.

As the disappointment of the Oilers’ season settles in, the focus turns to the positives that might be found; Ryan Nugent-Hopkins could be the first Oiler to win the Rookie of the Year honours, the Oilers could select another high calibre player and of course that Jordan Eberle could win the Lady Byng Trophy.

Oilers lose 3-1 to Avalanche
The Edmonton Oilers’ head coach Tom Renney was not at Rexall place as his team hosted the Colorado Avalanche. Instead, Renney is at home recovering from a concussion for the rest of the weekend. Renney was struck with an errant puck during the morning skate in Toronto February 6th. Since then, Renney has sporadically spoken with the media, but associate coach Ralph Kruger has stepped up to fill in. And so, Renney may now have a better sense of what the fans sit through at home while yelling at their coach and watching the Oilers lose 3-1.

Billy Moores has been as assistant coach, a scout and now the Coordinator of Player Development, working under the Director of Player Development, Mike Sillinger. Moores is currently in his 12th season with the Oilers and now finds himself working with a very talented pool of players.

Barking Up the Wrong Tree

When Cam Barker was bought out by his second NHL team, the Minnesota Wild during the off-season, fan and writer reaction was that it was a good idea. Yet when he signed a one-year contract worth $2.25 million with the Edmonton Oilers, it seemed to be a low risk gamble. Unfortunately for the Oilers, it seems as though they have lost that gamble.

About Oil Patch
Lisa McRitchie is a fairly new writer, online at least, but makes up for inexperience with passion for the game of hockey and memories of Mrs. Leskiw’s English AP class; who knew they would pay off one day.
Oil Patch focuses on the Edmonton Oilers, the Edmonton Oil Kings, The Oklahoma City Barons and Team Canada Hockey with game coverage, news updates, speculation and interviews.
Although the Oilers have had a difficult past decade… or three, here at Oil Patch, the future looks bright.
