Barons Blank Heat

Oklahoma City Barons shutout Abbotsford Heat 4-0
The months of anticipation led to a fairly lacklustre game Thursday night between the Abbotsford Heat and the Oklahoma City Barons. Of course if you were an Oilers or Barons fan, you left the Saddledome with an ear to ear grin. After all, the Oilers have so seldom won in this building, that even an AHL level victory is momentous.

Injury Bug Hits Nugent-Hopkins Too

The Edmonton Oilers once again have some serious injury concerns. Potential rookie of the year Ryan Nugent-Hopkins fell awkwardly into the board during Monday night’s game against the Chicago Blackhawks and left the game. Nugent-Hopkins will not play tonight against the Buffalo Sabres. Also injured in Monday night’s game was defenceman Tom Gilbert. For Gilbert it was a knee injury.

More Pain for Ryan Whitney

It has been over a year since Ryan Whitney’s ankle surgery, but the Oilers defenceman is still not completely recovered. Whitney suffered a broken ankle in a game on December 28th, 2010. After a successful surgery to repair the ankle, and a very long offseason Whitney returned to the Oilers lineup but he hasn’t looked like himself. Yesterday, Whitney spoke to the Edmonton media about his ankle and the pain that he still feels. The current diagnosis is tendinitis and the prescription is time.

Falling Back to Earth

Oilers lose 5-2 to Senators
So how about that Nail kid? He sounds like he could be great, and “fail for nail” has a certain je ne sais quoi to it.

The Edmonton Oilers drop their fourth in a row, and lose even more defencemen while trade speculation for every healthy player reaches all new highs. It seems that things have returned to the “normal” of the past two seasons.

Barker and Hemsky Return Date Pegged at… Soon

Ales Hemsky, Darcy Hordichuk and Cam Barker all look set to return to the line-up soon and so changes to the Oilers line-up must be made. Cam Barker and Ales Hemsky both took and as far as I can tell, passed Coach Tom Renney’s skate test. This test is something that all players hoping to return to the line-up must do, and the results must make Renney happy. Renney says he can tell if his players are not pushing themselves, or are pushing too hard.

Let The Good Times Roll

Oilers extend winning streak to 6 with 3-0 win over the Kings
The Edmonton Oilers began their six game road trip in Los Angeles against a team that featured several ex Oilers; Matt Greene, Jarret Stoll, Ethan Moreau, and most recent addition Dustin Penner. The Kings and their fans are of course unhappy with the Oilers due to Dustin Penner’s production with the team, that Ryan Smyth asked for a trade back to the Oilers, and that Colin Fraser has yet to play a game as a King. As the Oilers left Staples Centre, Kings’ fans were not any more pleased.

Teubert Up, Omark Down

With Andy Sutton’s suspension continuing through the first four games of the Edmonton Oilers’ upcoming roadtrip, and Cam Barker out day to day with a sore shoulder, the Oilers needed some help on the blue line. For Sunday’s game, the team called up Alex Plante. This move surprised many who thought and hoped that Colten Teubert would receive the call to play his first NHL game. Due to some passport issues, Teubert was not able to make the trip. Now that things are settled, Teubert looks to make his NHL debut against his former club.

Oilers Sweep Flames in Pre-Season Action and Injury Updates

Oilers beat Flames 3-0
The Edmonton Oilers came up victorious in a home and home series with the Calgary Flames this weekend, much to the delight of Oilers fans. When was the last time anyone was able to say that? Sure it’s just pre-season and these games don’t count, but following injury updates that were far from positive and new injury news for Sam Gagner, many fans will take pleasure where they can get it.

Oilers Training Camp Begins

Today is a big day for the Edmonton Oilers because today is the first day of training camp. There are a few Oilers and prospects that are not on the ice due to various injuries and it is also captain Shawn Horcoff’s birthday. If nothing else, truly this has to be the surest sign that the hockey season is days away. The Oilers’ today were divided into 3 teams, A, B and C to take part in various on-ice drills. With so many people at camp on day one, including the injured, the Oilers’ brass will have their work cut out for them to start making cuts.

Colten Teubert: “My post hockey modelling career might be in trouble”

After sustaining what appeared to be a broken nose, and what many fans feared may end up being a concussion on Sunday night during the Young Star’s Tournament in Penticton B.C., Colten Teubert has been sent home to Edmonton. Keeping optimistic and lively, Teubert tweeted “My post hockey modeling career might be in trouble at this rate but who cares! #livinthedream.”

About Oil Patch

Lisa McRitchie is a fairly new writer, online at least, but makes up for inexperience with passion for the game of hockey and memories of Mrs. Leskiw’s English AP class; who knew they would pay off one day.

Oil Patch focuses on the Edmonton Oilers, the Edmonton Oil Kings, The Oklahoma City Barons and Team Canada Hockey with game coverage, news updates, speculation and interviews.

Although the Oilers have had a difficult past decade… or three, here at Oil Patch, the future looks bright.
