NHL Young Stars Tournament Cancelled

The Edmonton Oilers have only participated in this Penticton B.C. tournament for the past two years, but for the past two years it has been eagerly anticipated by the fans. Some make the trip to the British Columbia wine country to get in one last summer vacation as well as to catch an early glimpse of the up and coming Oilers, who are also the only reason to watch Oilers’ hockey some nights, while others are glued to their computer screens to take in the live feed. Regardless of how it has been watched, this tournament has become fairly popular. News of the cancellation broke Wednesday over fears of contract disputes and the upcoming collective bargaining between the NHL and its players Joanne Ireland of the Edmonton Journal writes.
News of the cancellation came on the heels of the announcement that the NHL had served notice to the NHLPA that it wants to redo the current CBA. The deal expires on Sept. 15, so notification had to be served by Friday.
The Oilers would not comment on the cancellation, but it’s hard not to link it to a possible lockout. The NHL has also cancelled its opening regular-season games in Europe, and it is expected that the Detroit Red Wings will scrap their rookie tournament in Traverse City, Mich.
The league and its teams, obviously, do not want to be on the hook for pre-booked hotel rooms and rink rentals if the season is held up by contract negotiations.
Jim Matheson also writes that the tournament hosted by the Detroit Red Wings in Traverse City Michigan is “reported to be on hold with a decision to be made later in the summer.”

Oilers Still Have Room For More Contracts

When it comes to the number of contracts the Oilers have, you have to know that there will be some changes. The current contracts roll over on June 30th, and the new contracts take affect July 1st. What this means is that Pelss’ contract doesn’t count until July 1st, and the same is true for the Tyler Bunz contract.

Pelss Signs 3 Year ELC

The Edmonton Oil Kings are still alive and well in this year’s WHL playoffs, but the Oilers have decided not to wait and to sign left winger Kristians Pelss to a 3 year deal.
Pelss was a 7th round draft 2010 draft pick who has helped take the Oil Kings to the WHL finals (which will begin Thursday night in Edmonton) with his scoring and defensive abilities. Pelss may not have led the team in scoring, but finishing 6th in points and 5th in goals on a team with as much depth and talent as the Oil Kings have is quite the accomplishment.

It wasn’t a sweep, but the Oklahoma City Barons have made short work of their series with the Houston Aeros, taking the best of five series 3-1 and will now move on to the Western Conference semifinals to face an as of yet undetermined opponent. The San Antonio Rampage, Abbotsford Heat or Milwaukee Admirals are the possible opponents, but it will most likely be the Rampage that will make the trip to Oklahoma City.

Klefbom Prepared to Sign, But Not to Move

After finding an article saying that Klefbom was meeting with the Oilers, Martin Lundén author of Swedish Oil By dohfOs has penned an article indicating that Klefbom is prepared to sign a three year entry level deal, but that he intends to play out his contract with Färjestad of the Swedish Elite League.
I explained to him (Tambellini) that I really enjoy working here and what the situation looks like in Färjestad, when Frögren, Sevc and Berglund disappears, it favours me. I’m going up a few notches. We agreed that I would stay another year here (in Sweden, with Färjestad), it will do me good, there’s no stress. Edmonton want me to go over to a camp so I that I will feel more like a part of the team and get to meet all the big stars like Taylor Hall and the others. We’ll see when it gets, it also depends on what Färjestad allows me to do. The club has some real big stars emerging at once and also got a new first choice in the draft this summer. I feel like the timing signing with them and going over there will be perfect, Klefbom smiles.

Oilers Meeting With Injured Klefbom

It’s becoming a bit of a trend to hear nothing about defencive prospect Oscar Klefbom aside from injury news, and that can be quite alarming. This time, Klefbom is missing out on an international debut with the Tre Kronor due to a lower body injury. Come to think of it though, he might fit in well with what has been a regular occurrence for the Oilers; random, bizarre fluke injuries.

Barons to Face Aeros

Another hockey season has come and gone for the Oilers. Another season ending at the bottom of the barrel and with only hope for a successful draft left for fans to cling to. But maybe there is something to the hope of the rebuild, after all the Oklahoma City Barons in only their second season of existence have led the Western Conference of the AHL. While not every player on the Barons’ roster is an Oiler prospect a good number are and now it just remains to be seen if the success can translate to the next level. Playoff success couldn’t hurt though.

Medicine Hat Tigers lose to Moose Jaw Warriors 4-3 in OT
It was a clean sweep Wednesday night in Alberta. The Edmonton Oil Kings took game 4 by a score of 6-0 and in southern Alberta the Moose Jaw Warriors took a 4-3 overtime victory over Edmonton Oilers’ goaltending prospect Tyler Bunz.
For Bunz, this was very likely his last WHL game and unfortunately this is not the way that he would like to close this chapter in his life. Fortunately, he does have a newly signed 3 year entry level contract with the Oilers and a bright future ahead of him.
