Garbage Bag Thoughts

It was once again an early spring garbage bag day for the Edmonton Oilers and another basement season to be discussed. As the players came to speak to the media the message appeared clear the veterans seem more accepting of how the season went perhaps due to so many years of mediocrity while youngsters like Taylor Hall are extremely disappointed with this season and have not accepted this as their fate.

Taylor Hall has missed the last five games of the season due to a concussion, so imagine the surprise felt in Oil Country when the Oilers released a tweet stating that Hall will miss the remainder of the season due to shoulder surgery:
Hall (labral shoulder surgery) will not return to the #Oilers lineup this season, according to GM Tambellini

Oilers beat Blue Jackets 6-3 in rare afternoon victory
It is official, the last place team has been determined and for the first time in three years, it’s not the Edmonton Oilers. Of course speaking to some Columbus fans in the stands, they believe that they will not be lucky enough to actually draft first overall. To that I say, you just never know.
This Oilers win also means that the Oilers are no longer the worst Canadian team, at least for now, and because they are now tied for 71 points with the Montreal Canadiens and the New York Islanders.

Oilers shut-out Blue Jackets 3-0
After Tom Renney’s very public address discussing the attitude and effort shown by some members of the Edmonton Oilers, the team managed to win the battle for the basement. Renney has and will be criticised for airing the team’s dirty laundry in a very Pat Quinn like post came press conference Monday night following the loss to the San Jose Sharks. To many, Renney should have kept his anger in the room talking to the players and not the media about it. But with what looks to be a third consecutive bottom of the league finish, disappointment and frustrations must reach all new levels.

Oilers lose 3-2 to Sharks
The Edmonton Oilers and their fans remember when Jarome Iginla commented that “It’s always fun to play spoilers to the Oilers” as the Calgary Flames knocked the Oilers out of the playoff running. Well Mr. Iginla, revenge is a dish best served cold. Ice cold. It’s true, there are still several more games, but this game has an impact on the standings. Say hello to 10th place Cowtown. Yes, the Oilers are faring much worse in the standings, but once again the team will benefit from the addition of another top prospect. May this be the last year we say that.

Oilers lose 3-2 to Avalanche in SO
Oh to be an NHL on ice official. You’re never right by everyone’s eye. You have to make split second decisions in the game setting that directly affect the outcome of the game, and you cannot let personal feelings about a player influence your calls or it will mean you job. How easy it is a fan, a broadcaster, or a player to say that it was the right or wrong call from their bird’s eye view, but the fact of the matter is that officials are still only human and can only do their best. Saturday afternoon in Denver, Ales Hemsky’s waived off goal will be what will be most remembered by those who watched the game, and most appreciated by the Avalanche, a team still fighting to make the playoffs.

Oilers lose 5-3 to Canadiens
Edmonton, like so many other hockey cities gets giddy whenever they are visited by an original six team, but none so much more than the Habs. The reason being that it’s usually a guaranteed win. The Montreal Canadiens had not won a game in Rexall Place since 1999-2000 season the Oilers have gone 9 and 2 against the Habs during that time span. Make that 9 and 3.

The news broke last night that Taylor Hall did not participate in the team’s Sunday practice, ailing from an shoulder injury suffered Friday night against the Dallas Stars. Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal quoted head coach Tom Renney who stated: “This was a maintenance day here for Taylor. Obviously, he’s had some issues with his shoulder and T.D. (Forss, the trainer) thought it best that he stay off the ice to let it settle down. We hope he can play.”

Oilers beat Jets 5-3
This was the Edmonton Oilers’ first trip to Winnipeg in 16 years, but it’s funny how some things remain the same. While the Jets put up a good fight, the Oilers saw scoring from all positions and made this look like an easy two points.
There was also an unexpected Finn who earned what looked to be an easy two points; Lennart Petrell. Petrell has never had a muti-point game in the NHL but in Winnipeg where they once loved another Finnish player, Lenny would blossom.

Oilers shutout Flyers 2-0
It was a rare visit by the Philadelphia Flyers Thursday night in Edmonton, so rare in fact that the last time the Flyers won in Rexall Place was March 19, 2001. It’s not as though the Flyers play in Edmonton every year, although that would be a good change, but rather the teams only face each other in Edmonton every two to three years. Still, this victory is sweet for the Oilers; they need all of the wins they can get if only for their own sense of pride.
