Oilers Need a Steady Hand Going Forward

He was with them through the good, the bad and everything in between but after two seasons as the Edmonton Oilers’ head coach, Tom Renney will head in a different direction.
The announcement was made through a simple tweet last Thursday but it wasn’t until Wednesday afternoon that Renney would address the Edmonton media one final time. Speaking for 20 minutes, Renney discessed the season, possible replacements, and the next steps for both Renney and the team with the optimism and enthusiasm Oiler fans have become quite familiar with.

Oilers Coaching Situation Still Unresolved

Will he stay or will he go? The feeling in Edmonton is a lot of “I don’t know.” The Oilers’ season is now over and has been for 10 days but still there have been no contract extensions for either GM Steve Tambellini or head coach Tom Renney. While associate coach Ralph Kruger dispelled rumours this week that is will be coaching in Europe next season, nothing has been said by or concerning Tambellini or Renney. Most times no news is good news, nut in this case no one knows anything with any certainty.

Renney Fined for Criticizing
by Lisa McRitchie on 04/03/12 at 09:15 PM ET

Tom Renney is not the first Oilers’ head coach to be fined for questioning the actions and calls of the officials, but he is the most recent. Following Monday night’s game in Los Angeles and yet another evening of calls that seemed to favour the other team Renney skirted around the questions on officiating as best he could, but did say “Maybe they need Hollywood (Kings) in the playoffs, I’m not sure” For that, he has been fined $10,000. When former head coach Craig MacTavish was fined $10,000 it was for saying Mick Mcgeough’s phantom hand pass call that negated a game tying goal against the Dallas Stars was “retarded.” What is really interesting is that any given player could receive a $2,500 fine for an elbow to the head of another player. The coaches need to get a better union.

Tom Renney To Miss Game Due To Puck Inflicted Injury

The Oilers have suffered another injury today. No it wasn’t a defenceman, forward or even a goaltender that went down, but it was an injury suffered during the morning skate.
Just as the final player is coming off of the injured reserve list, Oilers’ head coach Tom Renney was struck in the head this morning with a puck. Renney was taken for stitches and it has just recently been released that Renney will not be on the bench for tonight’s game in Toronto.

Oilers lose 6-2 to Flames
If there were any doubts that this Edmonton Oilers team will not finish well in the basement of the league once again this year, they may have been removed with one single period. The Oilers came out flat and allowed three goals through the first 20 minutes. The best scoring chance and actual goal came from injured Taylor Hall who scored just as the buzzer rang. You have to feel for those young competitive, first overall draft picks, they’re just not used to this and they hope they never have to get used to such a long string of losses.

Oilers lose 4-1 to Stars
Things are going from bad to worse for the Edmonton Oilers. What started out as an amazing season, the Oilers at one point led the western conference has now turned to what appears to be another basement finish
The Oilers are still without top defenceman Ryan Whitney, lost Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Tom Gilbert on Monday and after a game with the Dallas Stars may be without Jordan Eberle for an uncertain amount of time. Eberle suffered a knee injury early in the game and did not return. There has been no official word on the extent of the injury, but this cannot be a good thing for the already ailing team.

Road Trip Ends, Hopefully so Does the Losing Streak

This loss makes three in a row, and so, the “fail for nail” sentiment is becoming more and more prevalent in my twitter feed amongst Oiler fans. All I can say to that is of course let’s just breathe and take this one game at a time shall we? After all, the Oilers are still above .500 and that in itself is a welcomed change.

Lack of Scoring Becoming Concerning
by Lisa McRitchie on 10/21/11 at 03:00 PM ET

The Edmonton Oilers have had various struggles this week; many games after playing so few, players come and going through the lineup due to injuries and the dreaded fall flu. Taylor Hall was questionable for Monday night’s game and did miss Tuesday night’s battle of Alberta. Coach Tom Renney has said that there are a few players that are also battling the flu or at least flu like symptoms as well.
Unfortunately, the flu cannot account for the trend that the Oilers have set this week, leading games only to lose in the end.

Renney Stresses Confidence For His Players
by Lisa McRitchie on 10/03/11 at 11:00 PM ET

Coach Tom Renney gets asked a million questions every day, but Monday’s questions seemed to be concerning many more topics than usual. Renney was asked about the condition of his players, his choices for cuts, his starting lineup, about the players who weren’t cut, the team trip to Jasper and everything else the people of Oil Country would like to know. The Edmonton Oilers have a portion of Renney’s interview available on their website and Jason Gregor of the Team 1260, has a much longer portion available in the 3rd hour of the October 3rd show.

Oilers Training Camp Begins

Today is a big day for the Edmonton Oilers because today is the first day of training camp. There are a few Oilers and prospects that are not on the ice due to various injuries and it is also captain Shawn Horcoff’s birthday. If nothing else, truly this has to be the surest sign that the hockey season is days away. The Oilers’ today were divided into 3 teams, A, B and C to take part in various on-ice drills. With so many people at camp on day one, including the injured, the Oilers’ brass will have their work cut out for them to start making cuts.
