8 Point Games Like a Needle In a Haystack

To earn a single point in an NHL game is a feat that many hockey players never accomplish. To notch 2 points is a good game. But 8 points in a single game? 8 in the current era of the NHL is a miracle. Before Thursday night in Edmonton 8 points in a single game hadn’t been accomplished since 1989.
There are now 16 players who have recorded 8 point games. Although there are hall of fame stars, you may notice that there are some names that are surprisingly abscent; Gordie Howe and Bobby Orr.
| Name | Team | Date | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maurice Richard | Montreal Canadiens | 12/28/1944 | 8 |
| Bert Olmstead | Montreal Canadiens | 1/9/1954 | 8 |
| Darryl Sittler | Toronto Maple Leafs | 2/7/1976 | 10 |
| Tom Bladon | Philadelphia Flyers | 12/11/1977 | 8 |
| Bryan Trottier | New York Islanders | 12/23/1978 | 8 |
| Peter Šťastný | Quebec Nordiques | 2/22/1981 | 8 |
| Anton Šťastný | Quebec Nordiques | 2/22/1981 | 8 |
| Wayne Gretzky | Edmonton Oilers | 11/19/1983 | 8 |
| Wayne Gretzky | Edmonton Oilers | 1/4/1984 | 8 |

| Sam Gagner | Edmonton Oilers | 2/2/2012 | 8 |
Wayne Gretzky’s first 8 point game
Sam Gagner’s 8 point game:
With all of the changes through the years of the NHL, the 23 year gap between 8 point games looked to be a record that would stand the test of time. Those who were fortunate enough to be at the game, or at least see it will always have the memories. For Oilers fans, that may have to be the joy that will last through the rest of the season.
For those that missed it, there is always the internet. Thankfully, these videos will last forever.

Thanks!
Points, scores, goal and point totals were so much higher in the 80s is exactly why 8 points now is ridiculous. The Oilers have been on the losing side of 10 goal games in the past two season and yet no one has racked up 8 points.

Gretzky still is the Great One, but something tells me in this day and age he wouldn’t be nearly so dominate.

Lisa McRitchie is a fairly new writer, online at least, but makes up for inexperience with passion for the game of hockey and memories of Mrs. Leskiw’s English AP class; who knew they would pay off one day.
Oil Patch focuses on the Edmonton Oilers, the Edmonton Oil Kings, The Oklahoma City Barons and Team Canada Hockey with game coverage, news updates, speculation and interviews.
Although the Oilers have had a difficult past decade… or three, here at Oil Patch, the future looks bright.

Um, Richard is on the list. His is the first name.
And Howe played in adifferent era than most of those 16 times. Most of them were in the defenseless 80’s when 100 point seasons were nothing special.
