Burrows Excels On The Scoresheet - Even If Refs Don’t Like Him

Alexandre Burrows of the Vancouver Canucks has been very newsworthy lately. The controversy created by his allegations that referee Stephane Auger told him in advance that he would be out to get Auger in a mid-January game against Nashville have been widely debated in hockey circles. It seems the NHL has managed to make this story disappear for the most part, despite any serious investigation into events and with only Burrows receiving punishment as the “whistleblower”.
That isn’t the only thing Alexandre Burrows has done lately. He has been playing very well. In fact, he is the top goal scorer in the NHL so far in 2010. Burrows has 13 goals in 12 games so far in January. That gives him a two goal lead over nearest competitor Alexander Semin of the Washington Capitals.
Burrows appears to be a strong second half player. Last year, he caught fire in the second half of the season before finishing with a career best 28 goal 51 point season. This year he is up to 23 goals and 45 points and looks likely to top that mark.
In many ways, Burrows could be a feel good story in the NHL. He is a player who went undrafted and spent a little over two seasons in the ECHL before winning an AHL job. After a year and a half in the AHL, he made his NHL debut at age 24. Players of his pedigree rarely become as successful as Burrows has. Instead of the story line of his improbable rise to the NHL and his lead in goals so far this month, the NHL’s story on Burrows is that he is the evil scapegoat who dives that you are supposed to bash instead of questioning referee impartiality. He is a player who is being sacrificed to the media in order to protect the officials.
