Early Playoff MVP

Teams have played either two or three games each at this point in the playoffs.  I think it is the earliest meaningful point to try to pick an early playoff MVP.  I think the clear choice at this point is Evgeni Malkin of the Pittsburgh Penguins.  Malkin leads the playoffs in both goals and points with four and seven respectively.

Malkin is carrying on his dominance from a regular season where he won the Art Ross Trophy.  His offensive totals have made large jumps every season in his young NHL career (from 85 to 106 to 113 points).  If he has another jump like that next season, I think many people will begin to call him the best player in hockey (and some people are already making arguments of that nature).

Malkin is off to a great start in the playoffs so far.  Will he keep it up and help the Penguins have a deep run?

More impressive has been Roberto Luongo’s 79 saves on 82 shots, including one shutout, in three straight wins over the Blues.

Hiller’s got 77 of 79 and a shutout against a better team.  But not the three wins part.

Clear choice?  Are you kidding?

Malkin has been great and is certainly one of the most valuable performers so far.  There are at least half a dozen other players who are certainly playing as well as Gino, though.

Zach Parise has scored in each of the Devils/Canes games, and has been (by far) the biggest impact player in that series.  He scored the game winner in #1, the Devils’ only goal in #2, and set-up the OT winner in #3.  He’s second to Malkin in goals and points.

The Ducks were out shot 35-17 in game #1, and 17-3 in the second period alone of game #2.  Hiller is stealing the series from the President’s Trophy winning Sharks with his play.

Luongo and Osgood have been almost unbeatable.  Crosby (first in assists) and the Sedins (5 & 4 points each) have also looked great.

Tell me again how Malkin is the “clear choice”?
