Along with the Stanley Cup and World Hockey Championships, another major hockey tournament is underway in the Canadian Major Junior Championships - the Memorial Cup. This tournament is played between the host city and the champions of the Western Hockey League, Ontario Hockey League and Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. This year the host is the Brandon Wheat Kings and the league champions are the Calgary Hitmen, Windsor Spitfires and Moncton Wildcats respectively.
Teams have completed the preliminary round robin portion of the tournament.
The defending champion Windsor Spitfires have a perfect 3-0 record. They are led by potential first pick in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft - Taylor Hall, Adam Henrique (New Jersey Devils prospect), Dale Mitchell (Toronto Maple Leafs prospect), Justin Shugg (2010 draft eligible) and defenceman Cam Fowler (2010 draft eligible). Phillipp Grubauer (2010 draft eligible) has provided solid goaltending.
Next up is the Calgary Hitmen who are 2-1. They have been led by Jimmy Bubnick (Atlanta Thrashers prospect), who leads the tournament with 8 points so far. Kris Foucault (Minnesota Wild prospect) and Tyler Shattock (St Louis Blues prospect) have also been significant offensive contributors. Martin Jones (Los Angeles Kings prospect) has provided their goaltending.
The Brandon Wheat Kings are 1-2 and are third place. They have been led by Toni Rajala (Edmonton Oiler prospect), Aaron Lewadniuk (undrafted) and Jay Fehr (undrafted). Jacob De Serres (Philadelphia Flyers prospect) has been their top goalie.
Failing to qualify for playoffs, by going 0-3 in the round robin is the Moncton Wildcats. Ted Stephens (undrafted) and defenceman Brandon Gormley (2010 draft eligible) have led them in scoring. Nicola Riopel (Philadelphia Flyers prospect) has been their number one goalie.
Calgary and Brandon will play in a semifinal on Friday and the winner meets Windsor on Sunday.
