Memorial Cup Results

The Memorial Cup completed last night in Brandon, Manitoba.  It is the Canadian Major Junior championship.  Here are the round robin results.  They left a semi-final between the Calgary Hitmen and the Brandon Wheat Kings and a final between the Windsor Spitfires and the semi-final winner.

Here are the results:

Brandon 5 Calgary 4 (overtime)

Although Brandon controlled most of the play in this game, Calgary had a 2-0 and 3-1 lead.  Brandon fought back to take a 4-3 lead, which Calgary tied with about five minutes left.  Jay Fehr (undrafted) scored the game winner for Brandon a little over three minutes into overtime.  Brayden Schenn (Los Angeles Kings prospect) led Brandon with three assists.  Travis Hamonic (New York Islander prospect) also had three points, while Scott Glennie (Dallas Stars prospect) and Toni Rajala (Edmonton Oiler prospect) had two points each.  Brandon Kozun (Los Angeles Kings prospect) was the lone Hitman to put up two points.  Jacob De Serres (Philadelphia Flyer prospect) was the winning goalie, with Martin Jones (Los Angeles Kings prospect) on the losing side.  This put Brandon into the final.

Windsor 9 Brandon 1

This was about as lopsided a final as is possible.  Windsor dominated.  Adam Henrique (New Jersey Devils prospect), Taylor Hall (2010 draft eligible) and Ryan Ellis (Nashville Predator prospect) each put up three points to lead the Windsor offence.  Matt Calvert (Columbus Blue Jacket prospect) scored the lone Brandon goal.  Philipp Grubauer (2010 draft eligible) was the winning goalie, while Jacob De Serres (Philadelphia Flyers prospect) was schooled by Windsor.

The Windsor Spitfires repeat as Memorial Cup champion and they did it in a more impressive manner than their win last year.  Taylor Hall was named Memorial Cup MVP for the second straight year.  He is the first person ever to accomplish that and likely has fully secured his selection as first pick overall in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.
