The Olympics completed yesterday. The final event was the men’s hockey final. For results of the preliminary round look here, the qualifying round , the quarter-finals here and the semi-finals here. These are the results of the medal games.
Bronze- 4th game Finland 5 Slovakia 3 The Fins took the lead when Sami Salo scored a late first period goal. The Slovaks took control in the second period with three goals from Marian Gaborik, Marian Hossa and Pavol Demitra. Demitra had three points in that run. The Fins were resilient and managed to come back in the third period. Led by two Olli Jokinen goals, they took a 4-3 lead that held until Valtteri Filppula added an empty net goal for insurance. Miikka Kiprusoff was the winning goalie. He faced 22 shots. Jaroslav Halak faced 32 shots in a losing cause.
Gold- Silver game Canada 3 USA 2 (overtime) Canada took the lead first on goals by Jonathan Toews and Corey Perry. They then went into a defensive shell to try to protect their lead. Ryan Kesler put USA on the board and Zach Parise added the tying goal with 24 seconds left. In overtime, Sidney Crosby was the Canadian hero with the Olympic winning goal. Roberto Luongo was the winning goalie with 34 saves on 36 shots. Ryan Miller faced 39 shots (stopping 36) in the losing effort.
Canada wins gold, USA silver and Finland bronze. This is the same medal result as in the women’s tournament. The writers named Ryan Miller the MVP of the tournament and named an all star team of Miller, Brian Rafalski, Shea Weber, Pavol Demitra, Jonathan Toews and Zach Parise. The directorate of the tournament named Ryan Miller the best goalie, Brian Rafalski the best defenceman and Jonathan Toews the best forward.
It was a great Olympic tournament and it seems too soon to be back in the midst of the NHL season.
