After the conclusion of the men’s preliminary round in the hockey tournament, the bottom eight teams had to play a qualifying game to get to the final eight. Here are the results:
Switzerland 3 Belarus 2 (shootout) The game opened with an Aleksei Kalyuzhny goal, which put Belarus up 1-0. Julien Sprunger tied it up for Switzerland midway through the first period. Teams exchanged goals in the second period with Hnat Domenichelli scoring for Switzerland and Konstantin Zakharov scoring for Belarus. Switzerland pressed hard to win the game. They outshot Belarus nearly 2-1 (43-22). Andrei Mezin was strong in the Belarus net. Jonas Hiller was the Swiss goalie. After the game ended a tie, they drew straws or had some kind of skills competition and Switzerland won it.
Canada 8 Germany 2 This was the most one-sided of the qualifying games. The result was never really in doubt. Jarome Iginla scored twice for Canada. Eric Staal added three assists. Mike Richards and Duncan Keith each added two points. Marcel Goc and Manuel Klinge added the German goals, but they were not scored until Canada had a huge lead. Roberto Luongo was the winning Canadian goalie facing 23 shots. Thomas Greiss faced 39 shots in the losing effort for Germany.
Czech Republic 3 Latvia 2 (overtime) Tomas Rolinek and Tomas Fleischmann scored in the first period for the Czechs and they thought they had the game under control. Despite carrying most of the play, the Czechs let Latvia back into the game when Martins Cipulis and Mikelis Redlihs scoring late in the third period to even up the score. David Krejci won the game with an overtime goal (his second point). Tomas Vokoun was the winning goalie. He faced 26 shots. Edgars Masalskis faced 50 shots in the losing effort for Latvia.
Slovakia 4 Norway 3 Michal Handzus and Marian Gaborik got the Slovaks into a first period lead when they each scored first period power play goals. Norway fought their way back into a 3-3 tie, after a very slow start (Slovakia outshot Norway 21-2 in the first period) when Anders Bastiansen scored with one second left in the second period. Miroslav Satan scored the game winning goal for the Slovaks midway through the third. Gaborik and Richard Zednik led the Slovak offence with two points each. The Norwegian offence was led by Mats Zuccarello Aasen and Patrick Thoreson who both had 2 points. Jaroslav Halak was the underworked Slovak goalie, who faced 19 shots. Pal Grotnes faced 40 shots for Norway.
The qualifying round went approximately according to prediction. Higher ranked teams won. All but one game was close. The quarter-finals go today. USA meets Switzerland, Russia plays Canada, Finland meets the Czech Republic and Sweden plays Slovakia.
