The men’s hockey tournament continued in the Olympics yesterday. After a preliminary round and some qualifying games, we have hit the first games where significant teams will be eliminated. Here are the results:
USA 2 Switzerland 0 USA carried the play through most of the game, but had trouble scoring on Swiss goalie Jonas Hiller (who faced 43 shots). It was third period before Zach Parise scored the first goal of the game. He added another in the closing minute into an empty net. Ryan Miller had a 19 save shutout.
Canada 7 Russia 3 Canada got off to a quick start and was leading 3-0 slightly over halfway through the first period. It was surprising how quickly a Canadian victory became a pretty safe conclusion. Ryan Getzlaf and Dan Boyle led the Canadian offence with three points each and Corey Perry had two goals. These were some of the players who were under fire after the Canadian loss to USA, who were offensive heroes in this game. Evgeni Nabokov was chased from the Russian goals when he allowed six goals on 23 shots. He was replaced by Ilya Bryzgalov, who was stronger stopping 18 of 19 shots. Maxim Afinogenov, Sergei Gonchar and Dmitri Kalinin scored the Russian goals. Roberto Luongo was the winning goalie with 25 saves on 28 shots.
Finland 2 Czech Republic 0 Both goalies played very good games. Miikka Kiprusoff had a 31 save shutout for Finland. Tomas Vokoun stopped 29 of 30 shots for the Czechs. Niklas Hagman scored midway through the third period to give the Fins a lead and Valtteri Filppula added another into the empty net.
Slovakia 4 Sweden 3 This was the biggest upset of the day. The Swedes carried the play through most of the game. They only allowed 14 shots on goaltender Henrik Lundqvist, but scored four times. It was the second period before the first goal. Marian Gaborik and Andrej Sekera gave the Slovaks a 2-0 lead, but Patric Hornqvist and Henrik Zetterberg soon evened the score. Pavol Demitra and Tomas Kopecky opened another two goal lead for the Slovaks. Daniel Alfredsson narrowed it to one goal, but the Swedes could not catch up the game. Jaroslav Halak was the winning goalie with 26 saves. Marian Hossa had three assists in the game. Demitra had two assists to go with his goal.
In the semi-finals, USA will meet Finland and Canada will meet Slovakia. They run on Friday.
