Schenn Up For A Day

The Los Angeles Kings have had some recent injury problems. Jarret Stoll suffered an injury in LA’s game against Calgary on Saturday and is out day-to-day. Rookie Andrei Loktionov suffered a dislocated shoulder in Wednesday’s game against Edmonton (which was his NHL debut). This left the Kings one forward short of their regular 12 for their game in Vancouver last night. With their AHL affiliate in Manchester, New Hampshire, on the other coast of North America, there was no way to get a twelfth forward to Vancouver in time for the game last night. Los Angeles dipped into the WHL for their solution. Their 2009 first round draft pick Brayden Schenn was in Victoria for a “Super Series” game pitting top Canadian junior players against top Russian ones. That made Schenn close enough to Vancouver than he could arrive in time for the game.
Under normal circumstances, after an NHL team sends a player back to junior, they cannot call him up for the remainder of the season. The only exception to this is in an emergency situation, where the team could not otherwise ice a full lineup of players.
Another issue that Los Angeles had to deal with is the fact that they have yet to sign Schenn. He was given a one-day amateur tryout - which is a deal only allowed in emergency situations. Schenn was not paid for his one day in the NHL and thus maintains his amateur status. Should he play further in the NHL, he will have to be signed to an entry level deal. He will not be able to play further NHL games this season (assuming there are no further emergencies).
Brayden Schenn played a little over twelve minutes in his NHL debut. He was shielded from tough situations, including most power play and short handed work. He did not score and went -1 on the game. Vancouver defeated Los Angeles 4-1. Brayden Schenn will rejoin his Brandon Wheat King teammates in time for their next game and remains a top prospect for the Kings.
It is an interesting situation that emergency forced a junior player into a one-day call up in order to fill the Los Angeles Kings roster. This highlights one problem with the AHL. The AHL is largely situated in eastern North America. With the exception of the Abbotsford Heat (who expanded this season and are the Calgary Flames affiliate), the westernmost AHL teams play in the Central time zone. Western NHL teams, while facing tough travel that costs them points in the standings are a long distance from AHL affiliates and are more likely to be caught in emergency situations, where they cannot call-up AHL players in time. The AHL needs to expand westward. I think Abbotsford shows that this process is underway, but in the meantime it is very tough for NHL teams to be as far removed geographically from their affiliate as Los Angeles is from Manchester.
