Top 20 Forwards Defensive Goals Versus Threshold

In my recent sabermetrics and hockey posts, I have been looking at Tom Awad’s goals versus threshold system.  I have listed the top 20 players by the offensive the goalie and the defensive portions of the system.  I am still trying to come to grips with the defensive part of the system and I think a good method to do so is to look at the top 20 forwards by this system.

Here they are:

Just like the defensive list, this is a list of people who play significant amounts of ice time on teams that are usually defensively strong.  These players put up good +/- ratings on their respective teams.

While some of these players are good defensive players.  The list includes the Selke Trophy winner in Pavel Datsyuk and one of its runners up in Jordan Staal.  It includes other renowned defensive forwards including Travis Zajac, Jonathan Toews, Patrice Bergeron, Henrik Zetterberg and Jay McClement.  It also includes players like Marian Gaborik, the Sedin brothers and Marco Sturm, who are clearly miscast.

One interesting case study that I will look at in the future is the case of Antoine Vermette.  He plays on Columbus, which is a particularly weak defensive team.

The most conspicuous person missing from this list is Ryan Kesler, who was the third Selke nominee.  I will look at how this system missed him in the future.

The goals versus threshold system is an attempt to estimate how much a given player is worth over a replacement player.  Defence is the hardest portion of the system to measure and it shows when looking at this list.  This defensive systems does not use the quality of opposition of a player, his defensive zone starts or his penalty kill role in any significant way and is too reliant on +/- and team shots numbers when a given player is on the ice.  It is a poor attempt to approximate something that is hard to measure reliably.
