Worst 20 Corsi Rates

A few days ago I posted the top 20 players by their adjusted Corsi rate. This uses the adjustment scheme used by behind the net which adjusts rates by comparing the values obtained when a player is on the ice compared to when they are off of them. I think this is a very good list for finding ineffective NHL players. Rate lists often select players who play in a limited role. Players who struggle and have poor Corsi ratings in limited ice time are not very good hockey players. On the flip side, it is not as clear that players who have good Corsi rates in limited situations are top players because they may not do as well in more expanded roles.
In order to have a meaningful adjustment, I have limited this list to players who played 50 or more games in 2010/11. Here are the worst 20 adjusted Corsi rates in 2010/11:
Rank | Player | Team | Corsi/60 min |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Tanner Glass | Van | -29.5 |
| 2 | Zenon Konopka | NYI | -23.5 |
| 3 | Scott Nichol | SJ | -21.4 |
| 4 | Fernando Pisani | Chi | -20.6 |
| 5 | Jamal Mayers | SJ | -19.2 |
| 6 | Manny Malhotra | Van | -19.0 |
| 7 | Blair Betts | Phi | -18.8 |
| 8 | Brad Staubitz | Min | -18.3 |
| 9 | Cam Janssen | StL | -18.2 |
| 10 | Matt Martin | NYI | -18.1 |
| 11 | Jody Shelley | Phi | -17.1 |
| 12 | Bryan Bickell | Chi | -16.7 |
| 13 | Tim Brent | Tor | -16.6 |
| 14 | Mattias Ohlund | TB | -16.5 |
| 15 | Vern Fiddler | Pho | -16.4 |
| 16 | Mike Brown | Tor | -16.2 |
| 17 | Paul Mara | Mon | -15.6 |
| 18 | Travis Moen | Mon | -15.6 |
| 19 | Mike Lundin | TB | -15.4 |
| 20 | Craig Adams | Pit | -15.3 |
This is largely a list of players who struggled this season. Few played significant roles with their teams. Defencemen Mattias Ohlund and Paul Mara had the most ice time on a per game basis. Neither played very well last year and that is why Paul Mara has been yet to get a free agent contract for next year.
Among forwards, Manny Malhotra had the most ice time, but played such an incredibly tough role with a huge number of defensive zone starts that if that is taken into account he has a positive adjusted Corsi. Vern Fiddler and Bryan Bickell are also forwards who played significant amounts of ice time, but had much more normal zone starts and cannot use that to explain their struggles.
Tanner Glass has the worst ranking on this list. He signed as a free agent in Winnipeg this summer and it wasn’t a great move for the franchise.
Because the adjustment is done by comparing players with their teammates, most of the worst rankings on this list come from strong teams. It is easier to look bad when compared to strong teammates. Six of the worst seven rankings on this list come from playoff teams. The exception is Zenon Konopka of the New York Islanders. He had a relatively tough assignment with the Islanders (though not on Malhotra’s level). After the top seven players there were more non-playoff players. That makes sense because non-playoff teams tend to have more weak players.
In the future I want to look at a few of these players as case studies. For the most part they were players who struggled in the NHL last season. Many played limited roles with their teams. A few played tough defensive roles (Manny Malhotra played a very tough one) and that excuses their low rankings. For the most part if a player plays a limited role on a team and has very poor puck possession numbers he had a poor season.
