Worst Corsi Rates

This summer in my look at sabermetrics and hockey, I have been looking at the Corsi Number.  They are a good judge of puck possession that is much like +/-, although it comes with different strengths and different weaknesses.

I have ranked the best 20 and worst 20 player adjusted Corsi Numbers.  This ranking is done treating Corsi as a counting stat accumulated over the season.  It can also be looked at as a rate stat and ranked per minute of 5 on 5 ice time played.  To that effect, I have listed the top 20 Corsi rates from 2008/09.  Today, I look at the worst 20.

Here are the 20 worst Corsi rates (as calculated on behind the net) from the 200/09 season with 50 or more games played:

When we compare this list to worst 20 Corsi Numbers as a counting stat, we see that only seven players are on both lists (Tim Jackman, Brendan Witt, Kurt Sauer, Jay McKee, Scott Hannan, Nick Schultz and Zbynek Michalek).  The majority or this list is made up of players who were not given enough ice time to be on the worst counting number list.  That is sensible.  Bad players shouldn’t get much ice time.  This list is a list of worse players than the counting number list.  It includes many players who were sheltered from serious ice time and still managed to get badly outshot.  Players like Ryan Johnson, Dan Hinote and Zach Stortini are on this list, but didn’t have enough playing time to make the counting number list.

Tim Jackman is worst on this list.  He played on a poor team with the last place New York Islanders and despite playing against limited competition still managed to fail.  I see little reason to think he should remain in the NHL.

This list is mostly made up of players who were on teams that posted bad team Corsi Numbers.  The biggest exception to that is Brad May, who spent last season with the Anaheim Ducks and Toronto Maple Leafs and both are positive Corsi teams.  That shows the need for a team adjustment to be done to these numbers, which will be posted in the future,
