Worst Free Agent Signing

It is far enough into the season to begin to look at the free agent signings made this summer.  One stands out as being a complete failure so far.  Martin Havlat left the Chicago Blackhawks to sign with the Minnesota Wild.  He signed a six year contract worth $30 million.  He was intended as a replacement for NHL goal scoring leader Marian Gaborik, who had jumped to the New York Rangers, but it has not worked out that way.

Havlat has not been a key to the Wild team.  He has two goals and nine assists, for eleven points.  This places him seventh on the Wild team in scoring.  His -17+/- rating is a team worst ranking.  It is second worst in the league.  He has not been successful so far in Minnesota.

Havlat has had an injury plagued career, but when he has been healthy he has done well.  Last season, he led the Chicago Blackhawks in scoring with 77 points.

Perhaps Havlat’s problems this season have been related to a hamstring injury that kept him out for four games.  He clearly has not found his place in Minnesota.  If Martin Havlat keeps playing at this level, the Wild will regret signing him as a free agent, if they do not already.

He has been completely invisible and incredibly disappointing this year.  Right now he’s on the fourth line with waiver pickup Andrew Ebbett and Derek Boogaard...which is for the best because he seems to bring down any other line he’s on.

Havlat didn’t “leave” chicago for the wild. He signed with the wild after chicago turned their back on him for Hossa........ great move by chicago though.

Contract details… as pointed out by one of our readers over at Hockey Wilderness, your contract details are incorrect. Havlat’s deal is 6 years, at 5 million per, not 5 years at 6 million per.

Thanks. And thanks for the post.
