February 20, 1998—an important date in franchise history.

Since the Hartford Whalers relocated to North Carolina for the 1997-98 season, there have been a handful of defining moments for the franchise. The disastrous first year in Greensboro, the death of Steve Chiasson, the reacquisition of Ron Francis, the opening of the RBC Center, the acquisition of Rod Brind’Amour, reaching the Cup Final in 2002, winning the Cup in 2006, to name a few. One defining moment that nobody talks about is the one that never happened.

Riley Nash signs with Carolina

In a summer filled with a little bit of drama, a little bit of mystery, and not much action here in Carolina, Riley Nash has put an end to some of the mystery. Today, he signed a three-year entry level contract with the Hurricanes, deciding to forgo his senior year at Cornell.
The rookie contract will pay him $1.85M spread over three seasons at the NHL level and also features a signing bonus of $262,500. At the AHL level, Nash would make $65k in all three seasons of the two-way deal. Details of the signing are here.
The talk around Raleigh has been that both Nash and the 2010 first round pick Jeff Skinner could make the big team’s roster. Since Matt Cullen was traded away at the trading deadline and Rod Brind’Amour retired, the Canes have a sudden lack of depth down the middle. This will give Nash, Skinner and a bunch of the Checkers an opportunity right away.
I’d say that most Canes fans are happy about this development, this will probably upset some people in Ithaca. And Edmonton.

Karmanos making Staal money
by David Lee on 07/16/10 at 08:38 AM ET

On Thursday, the Hurricanes learned that owner Peter Karmanos was given a fat paycheck from Compuware this year. When the company he founded reached share-based and sales incentives, he and the other executives received big bonuses. Mr. Karmanos’ bonus was $3.582M. With his base salary, this incentive bonus and a couple of other bonuses, Karmanos’ total earnings from Compuware were $8,592,364 this fiscal year, compared to $4.156M the previous season.
Mr Karmanos is still looking to sell 49% of the Hurricanes to a local investor, which would put a whole lot more cash in his pocket.
The salary Karmanos got from Compuware is a little bit more than the $7.5M raw salary that he will pay Eric Staal this season. The cap hit for Staal is $8.25M.

On Thursday afternoon, the Hurricanes announced the signings of goaltender Justin Pogge and defenseman Bryan Rodney to one year two-way contracts. This is good news for Charlotte, where both players will spend the bulk of, if not all of, the season.
Pogge, who was acquired from the Anaheim Ducks on the trading deadline this past spring will compete with Mike Murphy for the starting job down on the farm. His contract is for the league minimum $500k at the NHL level and $85k at the AHL level. He is guaranteed $105k.
Rodney’s contract is for $525k at the NHL level or $105k at the AHL level.

Brind’Amour’s sweater retirement set for February 18
by David Lee on 07/16/10 at 02:11 AM ET

The Carolina Hurricanes announced today that they will retire Rod Brind’Amour’s sweater number 17 on February 18, 2011. Appropriately, the visiting team will be the Flyers. He was drafted by and played two seasons with the Blues, after which he played eight an a half with Philly and nine and a half with the Hurricanes
Brind’Amour left Michigan State after only one season to join the Blues in the 1989 Stanley Cup playoffs. He scored goals on his first two shots in his NHL career.
Brindy’s #17 will join Ron Francis’ #10 and Glen Wesley’s #2 in the rafters. The club has also unofficially retired Steve Chiasson’s #3 and Gordie Howe’s #9. Chaisson passed away following a single car accident just after the Hurricanes were eliminated in the 1999 playoffs. As a 52-year old man, Mr. Hockey played his last NHL season with the Whale. Although his accomplishments happened well before his time in Hartford, the organ-eye-zation has unofficially taken his number nine out of circulation.

While the actual AHL schedule won’t be out until sometime in August, the league has announced the format.
The Charlotte Checkers know that they will, as expected, play a schedule heavy with games against the Norfolk Admirals (Lightning). The two teams will play twelve times; six in each team’s building. They will play the defending Calder Cup champ Hershey Bears (Capitals), the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and the Binghamton Senators eight times each. They’ll play the Adirondack Phantoms (Flyers) and the Albany Devils six times each. Each of the seven teams in the Atlantic Division and also the Syracuse Crunch (Ducks) will play four times.
They will not play any teams from the Western Conference.
Details are here.

Raleigh and Ithaca still waiting

Carolina’s prospect conditioning camp ended on Saturday, and there was supposed to be some news coming out of that. Folks in Raleigh and also in Ithaca are awaiting word from Riley Nash about his plans for the fall. The big center could return for his senior season at Cornell, or he could turn pro. He repeatedly turned down pro contracts from the Edmonton Oilers, who drafted him in the first round of the 2007 Entry Draft. He indicated that he wanted to play in the NHL or stay in college, and he knew that his chances of making the big team were slim and none. After Carolina traded for him at the Entry Draft this summer, he said that his options were open.
At the start of last week’s prospect conditioning camp, the Kamloops native said that he would declare his intentions at the conclusion of camp. Canes assistant coach Ron Francis has been on the job, throwing his weight around in effort to convince the 21-year old to turn pro. Nash’s coaches at Cornell aren’t trying to dissuade him from leaving; they’re simply reminding him about the benefits of staying.

No brotherly love in Raleigh

Jared Staal, the youngest of the four brothers, signed a contract with Carolina this summer, and he’s in Raleigh for the prospects’ conditioning camp this week. Eric is back in Thunder Bay, and is not allowing his baby brother to stay in the house. That’s rough.

Riley Nash to decide soon. Very soon.
by David Lee on 07/08/10 at 08:33 PM ET

The Edmonton Oilers grew tired of waiting for their 2007 first round draft selection Riley Nash to come around. He committed to playing (and, ostensibly, studying) at Cornell University, much to the chagrin of Oilers staff and fanbase. They finally shed him to the Hurricanes on draft day, and he seems to be having a slightly different attitude now. He’s suggested that he’s at least considering forgoing his Senior year at the Ivy League school for a career in the NHL. Whereas he used to say that he didn’t consider the option in Edmonton, he’s giving it some thought in Carolina. Although his decision can technically wait until at least April of 2011, he has said that he’s not going to keep anybody guessing.
Nash has joked that he’s going to hold a LeBron-esque press conference to announce his intentions. Seriously, though, he’s said that he’s not going to keep anyone in the dark. By this time next week, we will know whether the promising center will finish his college degree or turn pro. Ron Francis has made his wishes abundantly clear, and I would have to think that this will have some influence on the young man’s decision.

Corvo back in the Carolina fold
by David Lee on 07/07/10 at 05:02 PM ET

In a completely unexpected move, the Carolina Hurricanes have signed free agent defenseman Joe Corvo to a two-year contract, returning him to Carolina. He will earn $2M in 2010-11 and $2.5M in 2011-12. The Canes have also re-signed defenseman Casey Borer to a two-way contract. This definitely shores up the defense and will put to rest the ridiculous rumors about Marc Staal.
