Borer released from hospital, will miss remainder of season

The latest update on the Albany River Rats bus crash is that all but one of the players has been released from the hospital.  Defenseman Casey Borer was released from Berkshire Medical Center, but has suffered a broken vertebrae and will miss the remainder of the season.

Phil Janack, in his continuing outstanding work, has reported that Nicolas Blanchard is the only Rat remaining under hospital supervision.  He has some deep cuts to his torso and requires constant changing of the bandages.  Janack spoke with Rats head coach Jeff Daniels:

Another reason they want to keep him at the hospital, too, is the way he’s bandaged up, it’s something that has to be changed three times a day. Being a single guy and living with (Mike) Angelidis, I don’t know if Angie can handle that. His parents are in town and I believe his sister is at the hospital with him, so he has family there. I talked to him this morning and he seemed in good spirits, just kind of waiting to see what the next step was.

The AHL postponed tonight’s scheduled game against Bridgeport and gave Albany the option of postponing Sunday’s scheduled matchup with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.  After taking a day to get a better assessment of the team’s readiness, the Rats have exercised their option to postpone.

Borer, a St. Cloud State product, was drafted by Carolina in the third round of the 2004 entry draft in Raleigh.  He has played in 14 NHL games, registering one goal and two assists.  This season, he played in three Hurricanes games with no scoring points.

Blanchard was drafted by Carolina in the sixth round of the 2005 closed doors draft.  He has yet to make his NHL debut.

Our thoughts and best wishes continue to be with the Rats.  Every player was physically injured in some way, and most have experienced some psychological trauma as well.  It’s already been said a million times, but hockey is secondary at this point.  The focus is on these young men getting healthy again.  When they do resume play, we hope that this ordeal will make them stronger as a team.
