Canes suffer big loss

Carolina returned from a successful road trip, took three days off, then looked lost on their first game back. Tomas Vokoun and the Florida Panthers blanked the Hurricanes 5-0 in a critical “four point game” between the division foes. The Hurricanes are stuck on 59 points and are now three points out of eighth place.
Carolina, who looked sluggish out of the gate, fell behind 2-0 in the first and never recovered. On the other end, Tomas Vokoun was absolutely sensational, stopping all 42 shots that he saw. There’s not much anybody can do other than tip their hat to Vokoun for a job very well done.
Since Carolina suffered their first shutout loss of the season, the only remaining team who has not been shut out is the Detroit Red Wings.
It’s really hard to find something positive to say about this game from a Hurricanes standpoint. The penalty kill was perfect. There’s something. Nobody got injured. The scoreboard didn’t fall off the ceiling. That’s about all I can come up with.
Carolina will probably have a tough practice on Friday, then will host Rick Nash and the Blue Jackets on Saturday.

In such a big game, to come up so empty...mind-boggling. This team hasn’t been right since the Cup year, and it doesn’t look like this season will be any different. Basically, we’re a fifty-fifty hockey club, and I don’t think that will cut it for any chance at the playoffs.
I listened to Tripp Tracy talk about our “star power” outranking that of the Panthers in the pregame show - I didn’t see any on display during the game.
