Red & Black Hockey

Game seven

As of right now (8:57 pm eastern) the Canes and Bruins are tied at one in the first intermission.

Byron Betz gave the Bruins a 1-0 lead at 7:42 after a controversial icing call.  Dennis Seidenberg tied it for the Canes on a power play at 13:59.

The reason the Betz goal was controversial is that there was an icing call that should have been negated because Tim Thomas went behind his net as if to play the puck, but he never did.  In accordance with rule 81.3, play should have continued, but instead, icing was called and the faceoff went deep in the Carolina zone.  Seconds later, Betz scored.  Here’s rule 81.3:

81.3 Goalkeeper - If, in the opinion of the Linesman, the goalkeeper feigns playing the puck, attempts to play the puck, or skates in the direction of the puck on an icing at any time, the potential icing shall not be called and play shall continue.

Icing was called at the protestation of the Carolina bench and the faceoff went down.  Boston scored a goal a few seconds later.  The idea behind this rule is that the goalie pretends he’s going to play the puck, so the offending team doesn’t bother to pursue.  When he doesn’t play the puck, it’s tantamount to balking in baseball.

This was a horrible mistake, but Carolina responded by leveling the score on a power play goal.

I despise make-up calls, but Carolina is owed one here in a big way.

Hopefully, this mistake won’t matter with respect to the final score.
