On Sunday afternoon, we learned a few details about the injuries on Saturday.
Defenseman Joni Pitkänen suffered a meniscus tear in his knee. He’ll undergo surgery in Raleigh on Monday and is expected to miss three to four weeks.
Center Brandon Sutter suffered a concussion and was released from a hospital on Long Island. He will spend some time with his family in New Jersey before coming back to Raleigh sometime next week.
Meanwhile, the Islanders are exercising their right not to disclose injury information, but they have reported that goalie Rick DiPietro will visit a doctor to have an undisclosed injury examined. It’s unknown how long he’ll be out, but they’ve called up a reserve goaltender. It’s an ongoing saga there with Ricky and his health, and here’s the latest.
Carolina will recall Dwight Helminen from Albany to replace Sutter.
Helminen has never played in the NHL before. He has played in 204 AHL games, collecting 51 goals and 56 assists. He was Edmonton‘s eighth round selection in the 2002 NHL entry draft, and was later traded to the Rangers. He played three seasons for the Rangers’ AHL affiliate in Hartford, then in Finland before Carolina signed him as a free agent this past summer.
It looks like he’ll be wearing Big Joe’s old number 63, and I would assume that the guys call him “Mayonnaise” or “Mayo” or something like that.
Tuomo Ruutu already rejoined the team on Saturday, and Scott Walker should be pretty close.

Good for Dwight! I actually went to highschool with him, though he and his brother were too good to play on the HS team. He’s a great guy and a fantastic hockey player. I ran into him at the gym this summer right after he was signed and let me tell you, he was working extremely hard.
I always find it amusing when the beefcake gym rats watch us hockey players work our different muscle groups and perform some unique excercises while they’re hammering their biceps and pecs in front of the mirror. They look at us like we’re insane! But good luck to Dwight. I hope he takes full advantage of this chance that he’s been given.
