The Hurricanes started this week with a four game win streak and were about to embark on a four game road trip. The Oilers and Flames showed the Canes what the Alberta Advantage is, then the boys flew across the continent to New York for a back-to-back at Buffalo and Long Island.
Cam Ward was added to the list of injured players and Manny Legace got the start in nets. He picked up a 4-3 win against Ryan Miller, who did not perform well. He allowed a couple of uncharacteristically soft goals including the game winner from Jussi Jokinen. One that he saw all the way, but didn’t stop. No traffic, no screen, no re-direction. Nothing. Hopefully it was just a hiccup and not a sign of things to come for Ryan Miller. I say this with reference to his role on team USA for the upcoming Olympic games.
Eric Staal continued his pace, picking up a goal and an assist to stretch his points scoring streak to 11 games. He’s recorded 14 (10/4) points in nine games since being named captain of the team.
Cam Ward was sent home with what appears to be back spasms. Goaltender Justin Peters was called up from Albany, and he might get the start in nets on Saturday at the Islanders. In related news, Zach Boychuk was also recalled and the injured Chad LaRose was placed on the injured reserve list.
The 20-year old Boychuk, who was Carolina’s first round selection in the 2008 draft, appeared in his 10th game this season and he recorded an assist on the game’s first goal.

Miller needs a rest. We’re coming up on the Olympic break and he is already starting to tire out. Lalime had one bad game and has’nt seen action since. Lindy Ruff is so stubborn about using his backups. He will overwork the top tender until they can’t even win anymore. Regier is just sitting in the pressbox wondering where he’s gonna find the next Briere or Drury when they could’ve made a pitch themselves for Kovalchuk. They are not scoring right now. I would’ve offered Vanek in the trade. He supposedly is their only true scorer and yet he rarely scores of late. And no one has scored since the departure of Briere and Drury like they did before. Just another repeat season for the Sabres. Millers’ going to the Olympics and will probably be overused there as well when his face reads…..I’m ready for a game or night off. Regier won’t pull any trade worth speaking about by the deadline and hot Ottawa is about to take over the division. I don’t blame Lindy or Ryan or Vanek…..the blame starts at the top where nothing ever seems to take place. It’s been the same team and the same story for too long. Tallinder and Lydman come up for contracts when the season closes…..what is their agenda? You have a marginal player/captain in Rivet who has’nt played to potential since his injuries early last year. I’d dump him as fast as I could…...it’s Myers’ defense now. Sekera belongs in the lineup every night as well…..what’s so special about Butler? They have Weber down below also waiting for a spot to vacate. Up front they could use a Patrick Sharp type to finally replace on of the two centers they lost years ago. Another true scorerer who can play the whole game would’nt hurt either. I guess I’m dreaming though because this is the same team run by the same idiots in the front offfice for too long. How about just a new GM for starters? Someone who makes smart deals like Darcy used to but not afraid to pull the trigger when they have to and be able to honestly know what is lacking to fill that void. The team is not bad but it could be better and that would be a start.
