Tonight, while I should be doing something productive like cleaning the apartment or cleaning the apartment, I’m going to seize the opportunity to see in person one of the most exciting figures in sports: Stephen Curry. If you’re from the United States and/or you follow college basketball even a little bit, you know who this is.
Curry and the Davidson College Wildcats will be visiting my city to play the UNC-Greensboro Spartans. It should be a cake walk. I’m getting a lot of flak at work because we’re technically on the UNC-G campus, but I’ll be rooting for Davidson. I have my reasons. I went to high school in Charlotte, just a few miles from Davidson. I graduated from Guilford College, which, like Davidson, was founded in 1837 and has less than 2,000 students. It’s all about the tiny colleges of the world uniting and taking over.
It’s not that I’m actually a Davidson fan. I’m a UNC Tarheels fan. My college is only in division III, and nobody has ever heard of us. This is, though, an opportunity not to be missed. My money is on Curry to drop 35 points and Davidson to win by 20 or more.
After that, I’ll come home and watch the Canes get smoked by the Sharks.

I used to live in Davidson, and had friends who went to school there (very smart friends). Its a nice town and an amazing school. One of those friends played on the football team which was so small time, I swear my high school team would have beaten them. Small schools like Davidson with Curry, or Indiana State with Larry Bird are fortunate in the sport of basketball that one outstanding player can carry them to very high places. Hockey is a bit more difficult…just ask Tampa and Pittsburgh.
I used to drive up to Greensboro to watch the Canes. They would sell my men’s league in Charlotte discount tickets. $20 would put you in the 4th row on the blueline. There was a curtain that would block out the entire upper deck. There were so few fans in the arena, unless the Rangers or Flyers were in town, that you could clearly hear someone yelling insults from the other side of the rink. Ahh, the memories. I did finally get to see Gretzky for the first time there, when he was with the Rangers, so thats a particularly good memory of the Coliseum. Up until then it was always watching the Greensboro Monarchs play my beloved Charlotte Checkers.
