Tuesday’s game between the Panthers and Penguins was pretty important to everyone fighting for a playoff spot in the East. They started the day in seventh and eighth place respectively, tied with 76 points, just one point back of sixth place Carolina.
A lot could have happened in this game, and none of it was good for the Hurricanes. No matter what, at least one team would move ahead of them. The overtime win by the Pens did the most damage. It drops the Canes from sixth to eighth. Pittsburgh has moved ahead on points. Although Florida and Carolina are tied with 77 points, Florida holds a game in hand, so they get the tie-breaker.
Carolina will play the first of three road games tomorrow against the Blackhawks. A meaningless out-of-conference game that will still shake up the standings if Carolina manages at least a point. This race will go down to the final day. Don’t make any plans just yet.
