Luke DeCock of the Raleigh News & Observer is reporting today that Gary Bettman has toured the Raleigh area in a serious effort to make good on a promise made eight years ago to bring the NHL All-Star game to Raleigh.
NHL commissioner Gary Bettman toured the Triangle on Friday, visiting hotels and Raleigh’s new Convention Center as he prepares to live up to his 2001 promise to bring an All-Star Game to the RBC Center.
Bettman wouldn’t offer any hint of a potential date, but all indications are that the league has the Triangle penciled in for 2013.
“When we made the commitment, these were the things I was told were going to be in place,” Bettman said. “We owe an All-Star Game, and I can’t as I sit here today say when it will be, but we will get the Triangle into the rotation.”

Because of the Vancouver Winter Games in 2010, there will be no ASG. The 2011 game has already been awarded to Phoenix to make up for the one they lost to the Olympics in 2006.

It seems like what’s going on here is that the league is making an effort to let each team host an ASG and an entry draft. Until everyone gets one, I don’t think you’ll get another.
These high profile events are good for exposing the game to the market and the market to the game. You know… in the interest of growing the sport and educating all of us feebleminded backwoods hicks. It’s in the league’s interest to support its member clubs by giving them the opportunity to prove their meddle with these high profile events. Maybe when everyone has had a go at it, they’ll have the ASG and the entry draft in an original six city every year. Maybe they’ll contract the other 24 teams.

Good to see the league is making an effort to play the game in markets that don’t give hockey the time of day , but Detroit will be now 30 + YEARS without one!!!!
Keep up the great work Gary…jackass.
