Rats return to ice with new faces

On Wednesday night, the Albany River Rats returned to the ice for the first time since their team bus crashed last week, sending five to the hospital. They had four callups from the ECHL and Brandon Sutter was assigned to Albany by Carolina. Sutter had been a healthy scratch for three games and is in Albany as an underage player. By rule, the AHL does not permit teenagers raised in North America to play. Sutter isn’t old enough, but is permitted to join the team because it’s being called a “conditioning stint”.
Sutter scored the game’s first goal, and the Rats went on to defeat the Bridgeport Sound TIgers 3-2 in a shootout. The Rats still find themselves well out of a playoff spot, but are hoping for a big push down the homestretch.
In an unusual move, the River Rats radio broadcasting crew used one of the injured Rats—Brett Carson—as a fill-in for their color commentator, who was also injured in the bus crash.
More on this from Luke Decock of the N&O.
