The bus crash: one year later

One year ago to the day, the Albany River Rats were involved in a horrible bus accident. En route from Lowell MA to Bridgeport, their team bus broke down on the side of the road. A replacement bus was brought in, and things got much worse from there. Along a snowy, icy corridor of remote roads, the bus hit a guard rail, flipped over, and skidded across the road. Several players were seriously injured, including forward Joe Jensen and defenseman Casey Borer, who suffered a broken vertebrae. Jensen is no longer with the team and is still suffering post-concussion symptoms. Borer had a long recovery time, and only just returned to the ice in January.
Over at carolinahurricanes.com, David Droschak is writing a two-part series about the crash and the aftermath. The first part can be found here. Pat Dwyer, now with the Canes has a chilling quote in that article:
The boys were playing around on the(replacement) bus and having fun. The ironic thing is we were crawling in and out of the escape holes and stuff like that, just having a good time, not knowing we would eventually have to use those.
