Ward out, Williams maybe in

On Monday, the Hurricanes got a bit of bad news and a bit of good news.
Cam Ward, who left Sunday’s game against the Ducks after the first period has been ruled out for at least a few games. He has, apparently, suffered a groin injury. Justin Peters has been called up from Albany to back up Michael Leighton.
The good news is that Justin Viva Williams may play this week, perhaps as early as Thursday against the Penguins. Williams suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon over the summer and was scheduled to be out for 4-6 months. He recovered way ahead of schedule and has been practicing with full contact for about a week.
Viva missed 45 of the last 46 games last season with a torn ACL followed by a back injury. He has missed the first 25 games of this season. The last time he played a full game was a 3-2 win over the Leafs on December 18 of last season. The “Ponikarovsky Game”. The Leafs had a 2-0 lead with under two minutes to go. Leafs winger Alexei Ponikarovsky carried the puck deep into the Carolina end, but mysteriously ignored the open net in front of him. Seconds later, the Hurricanes stole the puck and got a goal at the other end. Then another, forcing overtime. Scott Walker got the winner in OT, and Ponikarovsky was the biggest goat since Patrick Stefan.
Curiously, that was the same game that marked the end of Avi Tanabe’s career.
With a sputtering offense and a wretched power play, Williams can’t get back soon enough.
