On Wednesday night, the Hurricanes lost 3-2 to the Blackhawks in a game decided by the shootout. Just 15 hours after yours truly moaned about the way standings points are awarded, I was smote by the hockey gods and my team skated off with the phantom OTL point that I complained about. And does this humble pie ever taste good!
The Blackhawks, who I don’t watch very often, played a fantastic game in their own end. Carolina couldn’t sustain any offensive pressure and the Hawks managed to draw two draw two penalties in Carolina’s offensive zone. Because his defense worked so hard in front of him, Cristobal Huet didn’t have to be spectacular. He was certainly good, though.
On the other end, Cam Ward was outstanding for the Canes. He made at least three highlight reel saves including two on Patrick Kane breakaway chances. Unfortunately, Ward wasn’t as sharp in the shootout. He was beaten on three of four shots.
All in all, it was a great game to watch, even if the ending doesn’t suit me. Carolina will take their charity point and hit the road where they will play the back end of a back-to-back in Dallas tomorrow at 8:30.
