Samson in for Sutter today

Hurricanes coach Paul Maurice has announced that Brandon Sutter will not be able to play tonight against the visiting NHL Phoenix Coyotes. Sutter suffered a “lower body injury” Thursday night against the Penguins, and didn’t feel right today in the morning skate. Not that it matters, but depending on whose account you believe, Sutter was injured (1) in a collision with Bill Guerin; (b) after getting legs tangled with Kris Letang; (iii) after being checked by Evgeny Malkin; or (D) when he got a skate in a rut and lost an edge.
Coaches were hopeful that he would return to the lineup for tonight’s home game, but it’s not going to happen. Jerome Samson has been recalled from the Rats to fill the roster spot. In one previous recall, Samson (Sam-SAWN) had one assist and four PIMs in five games. He is, by miles, the stats leader in Albany with 62 (32/30) points in 65 games. The native Quebeccer wears the extremely unusual number 67 for the Canes and 17 for the Rats.

The future is now for Canes

The Hurricanes have been dealing with a lot of injuries this season, and while they are far from the top of the list in terms of man-games lost, the injuries to key players are really starting to mount. More than any season except maybe 2002-03, they’ve had to rely on players from the American League to fill the roster. For a few weeks, they’ve been playing with no less than five players from the AHL, and with the Staal situation, they’ll start tomorrow’s game with six skaters who started this season in the American Hockey League.
And don’t forget that Manny Legace didn’t even have a pro contract when this season started.
Like Hudsucker Industries, “The Future is Now” for the Carolina Hurricanes. They’re getting a very good look at the kids who will be the future of this team.
While it isn’t official, and no call-up has been made, this depth chart from the team’s official page suggests that Jerome Samson (pronounced Sam-SAWN) will indeed be the latest Rat call.

Rats looking good

While the Hurricanes are struggling to find offense and to find themselves, things are looking good down on the farm. On Saturday, the Albany River Rats went up to Glens Falls and defeated the Adirondack Phantoms 2-1 in the first of twelve games between the two teams. Justin Peters stopped 31 of 32 shots and Jerome Samson scored the game-winner 2:21 into overtime. Through five games, the undrafted right wing has tallied nine (4/5) points.
Surprisingly, this game featured only one fight, and it occurred early in the first. So far, I’m wrong with my prediction that this series would see more fighting majors (2) than goals (3).
The Rats find themselves atop the East division of the AHL, and I’ve read some comments by Albany natives comparing this team to the 1995-96 team who won the AHL’s equivalent of the President’s Trophy with a record of 54-19-7.
