Canes steal home ice

On Friday night, the Hurricanes played a much better game than they did on Wednesday, and the end result was a 2-1 overtime win off the stick of Tim Gleason. With the road split, Carolina has stolen home ice from the Devils. Games three and four will be in Raleigh on Sunday and Tuesday.
Carolina is no stranger to overtime hockey in the playoffs, and defenseman Nic Wallin has been the go-to guy. He has three overtime winners in his playoffs career, which is tied for second among active players. Although he didn’t notch the game winner, he’s rumored to have played a major part in it.

Canes lose fourth in a row

On Thursday night, with a nearly full house, the Hurricanes lost a very exciting game 6-4 to the Leafs. The game was pretty much a microcosm of the Hurricanes season. Long stretches of disappointment punctuated with brief but intense moments of inspiration. It was also one of the most intense regular season games I’ve ever attended.
The Canes stood around for 37 minutes while the Leafs built a 4-0 lead. Then they got a fluky goal from Matt Cullen with about two to play in the second. The Canes came out on fire in the third, completely owning the first 12 minutes of the period. On second period markers from Tuomo Ruutu, Eric Staal and Scott Walker, Carolina climbed all the way back to tie the game. And then the wheels fell off.
Carolina gave up a four-on-three power play goal to Tomas Kaberle late in the third, then an empty netter from Jason Blake. It completed the hat trick for Blake and closed the scoring out at 6-4.
It was another painful loss, the fourth in a row. However, some good things did happen, even if that only lasted 14 minutes.

Tim Gleason on the Hurricanes lousy play

On Thursday, the Hurricanes had a very long and hard practice after playing a completely terrible game on Wednesday night. Tim Gleason sat down with News & Observer columnist Luke Decock and basically blasted himself and the rest of the team.
“That’s what happens when you suck… Go ahead and write that down…
We went through a hard workout today which was well deserved because we stunk yesterday and we stunk (against) Atlanta…
Starting from myself, I was terrible… I made a stupid play right off the bat and that hurt us. I know I have to be better.
That’s the meat of it, but I recommend reading the entire article here.

Carolina opened their 11th season on Friday with a wild game against division foe Florida and a 6-4 win. It wasn’t pretty, but two points in the standings look good any day of the week.
The Hurricanes stumbled out of the gates, giving up two goals in the first six minutes of the contest, but settled in nicely with goals from six different players and assists from seven different players. At the end of it all, Tim Gleason earned the game’s first star with three assists.

Canes defense remains a mystery

The Hurricanes have trimmed their training camp roster to 33 players, and with the regular season just 10 days away, there are still quite a few lineup issues to be resolved. The most intriguing issue is the blueline. There are still nine defensemen in camp, and only three of them—Joe Corvo, Tim Gleason and Joni Pitkänen—are guaranteed roster spots. And this doesn’t count the enigmatic and AWOL David (aka ”Avi”, aka ”Snuggles”) who has not shown up for camp and claims he is still concussed.
The News&Observer has opened the floor for the debate: How will the defensive pairings be filled out? Everybody agrees that Gleason, Pitkänen and Corvo are in the top four. The debate is about who among Anton Babchuk, Tim Conboy, Frantisek Kaberle, Josef Melichar, Dennis Seidenberg and Nic Wallin will play every night, who will be a healthy scratch, who will be relegated to Albany, and finally who will be traded to Los Angeles. To make matters more confusing, free agent Bryan Rodney is among the last men standing after another round of cuts on Sunday.
