Hurricanes send Boychuk back to juniors

After two games with the big team, the Hurricanes have decided to return their 2008 first round pick Zach Boychuk to his junior team. Since he played in less than nine NHL games, his contract hasn’t kicked in yet. He will return to the Lethbridge Hurricanes of the Western Hockey League.
The 19-year old was second on Lethbridge last season with 72 (33/39) points and was tops with 21 (13/8) points in the WHL playoffs.
Boychuk is underage and ineligible for AHL play, and according to NHL rules, he can’t be brought back up this season. From today’s N&O:
The first year of his entry-level contract now rolls over to next season; the Canes cannot recall him or send him to Albany (AHL) until Lethbridge’s season ends.
Scott Walker, Tuomo Ruutu and Justin Williams are all still out of the lineup with injuries, and Boychuk’s departure leaves one fourth line wing position available…

Carolina begins road journey

On Friday, the Hurricanes will play the first of six straight road games, and they’ll have to do it with yet another forward on the shelf.
When Carolina visits Los Angeles tonight at 10:30, they’ll most likely be doing it without Tuomo Ruutu. He missed most of the pre-season with a groin issue, and it’s persisted enough for his status to be deemed “doubtful”.
Ruutu makes three top nine wingers on the injured list. There will be a lot of line juggling, and Chad “Sharpie” LaRose was practicing with the top line on Thursday, so he might get a chance to do that in game action. Patrick Eaves, who started the season on the top line, has found his way into Peter Laviolette’s doghouse, but there’s no telling how the lines will be made tonight.
Still, this is an opportunity for another young player.

As expected, the Hurricanes and their top pick Zach Boychuk came to terms on Saturday on a three year contract that is exactly the same as the one Brandon Sutter signed in March.
As the signing came on Boychuk’s 19th birthday, it was a pretty sweet birthday present. From the N&O:
I’ve had some good presents in the past but I don’t know if any can top this one… I’m excited.
Exciting indeed. I think I got a watch for my 19th birthday.

The Hurricanes are expected to make an announcement today about their 2008 first round pick (and birthday boy) Zach Boychuk at some point today. Chip Alexander of the News & Observer has been reporting all week that negotiations have been ongoing and that they are very close to signing a deal that is identical to the contract 2007 top pick Brandon Sutter signed back in March. Today is Boychuk’s 19th birthday, which means he is ineligible for the AHL. His options will be to play under contract on the big team, or go back to junior hockey.
