Canes, having cap issues, place Ward on LTIR

Although the Hurricanes are far from the most injured team in the NHL (Carolina has 57 man-games lost compared to 109 for the Canucks), they are starting to run into some cap issues.  Carolina started the season a little over their own budget, but with plenty of room under the cap.  That’s no longer the case.

To ease the strain, Carolina has placed Cam Ward on the Long Term Injured Reserve and has recalled Justin Peters from Albany.  This allows a portion of Ward’s salary to be withheld from the cap hit.  Presumably, this has been done retroactive to November 8.

Habs top Canes in shootout thriller, Leighton hurt

On Tuesday, the Hurricanes earned one standings point and lost another goaltender.  Carolina had a one goal lead late in the third period, but Manny Legace gave up a bad goal to Sergei Kostitsyn which sent the game into overtime.  In the overtime period, Carolina had a man advantage for the final two minutes of play, but failed to cash in on the four-on-three advantage.

The shootout went six rounds, with Maxim Lapierre getting the goal and Carey Price making an improbable skate save on Matt Cullen.

Carolina has earned points in three straight games, and Brandon Sutter scored again.  These are good things.  But the rather bad news is that Michael Leighton suffered an apparent groin injury in the second period.

The Legace hazard (or: It’s just Manny being Manny)

On Monday morning, the Hurricanes announced what everyone knew was coming.  They have signed 36-year old veteran goaltender Manny Legace to a one-year two-way contract.  He will be paid the league minimum of $500k at the NHL level and $105k at the AHL level.  The one-time Stanley Cup winner was last seen in Atlanta’s system on a tryout contract with the Chicago Wolves of the AHL.  This, of course, came on the heels of Cam Ward suffering a deep laceration on his left thigh on Saturday.  Ward has been ruled out for at least four weeks.  The signing was pretty much an emergency situation, and given the price tag, I don’t think they could have done any better.

While some people are making light of the fact that Legace was drafted by (but never played for) the Whale, there’s a far more alarming thing about Legace that should concern all of us.  There’s a really bizarre trend with his health.  Specifically, he’s never been able to stay healthy in December

When will the nightmare end?

On Saturday night, the Hurricanes lost more than just the game.  For the third time in the last four games, they scored the “all-important” first goal.  For the second time in as many nights, they led after one and looked great after two.  For the twelfth time in a row, though, they ended up with a loss.  Not only are the losses piling up, but so are the injuries.  And tonight, the Canes suffered an injury loss that they can’t afford: Cam Ward.

Early in the first period, Ward was cut by the skate of Blue Jackets captain Rick Nash, who was skating through the goal crease.  Although it was well inside the crease, the contact was incidental, and nobody will blame Nash for causing the injury.  Ward had to be rushed to the hospital, where he was stitched up and where he will be held overnight.

In March of 2007, Ward suffered a similar injury in a game against the Rangers.  The fear was that he was going to miss the remainder of the season and that he wouldn’t be able to play for Canada in the IIHF World Championships.  He only missed three games and played very well in the IIHF tournament.  Hopefully this fall, he’ll be able to make a similar speedy return to the lineup.

Broken leg will sideline Erik Cole for 4-6 weeks.

The Hurricanes announced today what we all knew without needing the confirmation:  Erik Cole suffered a broken bone in his left leg after a nasty collision with the Bruins’ Dennis Wideman on Saturday night.  Wideman’s check was clean, but it unfortunately resulted in yet another injury for Cole.

Tuomo Ruutu will slide up to the first line right wing, then some other shuffling will leave a vacancy on one of the fourth line wings.  Tim Conboy, who can play on either wing and also on defense, will be the short-term solution.  The former Albany River Rats captain is known more for pugilism than for his offensive acumen, but will have an excellent opportunity to prove that he has earned his one-way contract.  If you’re in a fantasy league that rewards PIMs, go ahead and snatch up Conboy.  He’ll be good for at least 4 penalty minutes per game.

I don’t mind seeing Conboy in the lineup on a game-by-game basis, but I’m a little frightened by the prospect of seeing him as a regular.  I’m much more into the idea of bringing up Zach Boychuk or Drayson Bowman from the Rats.

Carolina’s game two lineup changes

With each cryptic update of the injury situations with Tuomo Ruutu and Erik Cole, it seems more and more evident that neither will suit up for tonight’s game two at Mellon Arena.  Ruutu’s right ankle umm… “lower body” sounds like it’s worse than it looked and Cole’s left knee umm… “lower body” sounds like it might not be as bad as it looked.

The updates are cryptic, confusing and contradictory.  One hour, they’re saying that Ruutu is definitely out and Cole is a gametime decision.  The next, they say that Cole is doubtful and Ruutu is out.  The next, they say both players are hopeful.  No details have been released about the MRI results for either player.  I’m going to assume that neither player will go tonight.

There are a load of different lineup options which have been outlined by Luke Decock.  Here’s what I think:

Cole Ruutu doubtful for game two

The headline of the article in the N&O says that Erik Cole and Tuomo Ruutu are “questionable” for Thursday’s game two with Pittsburgh.  The text of the article suggests that it’s worse than that.  Canes GM Jim Rutherford and head trainer Pete Friesen both said that it “doesn’t look good for either player”.

Both players suffered knee injuries in game one resulting from questionable hits by the Pens.  Mark Eaton was not penalized for his play on Ruutu (which some people are wrongly calling a slew foot).  Nor was Matt Cooke for his knee on Cole.  Neither player will be facing supplemental discipline.

The officials and the league got it wrong with Ovechkin v Gonchar, and they have gotten it wrong with Cooke v Cole.  I’m not calling Cooke a dirty player, but the play was very dangerous and it resulted in an injury.  If they don’t tighten up their officiating and disciplinary standards, things could get really ugly.  Frontier justice is not a pretty thing.

Canes lose game one, Ruutu, Cole

For the third time in a row, and the fifth of the last seven, Carolina has lost game one of a playoff series.  In every other series, Carolina has come back to win the series.  More important than losing the game is that they may have also lost Tuomo Ruutu and Erik Cole to knee injuries.

Miro Satan, who wasn’t even in the lineup when the playoffs began, got things started for the Pens at 9:17.  He stepped out of the penalty box, where he had been sitting for being found guilty of holding, accepted a pass from Matt Cooke, and was off to the races.  He came in alone and ended up lifting a backhander past Cam Ward.  Hal Gill picked up the secondary assist.  Those kinds of goals are always a little more painful, and it was certainly a tone-setter.

Langenbrunner, Salvador doubtful for game five

According to reports out of New Jersey, Devils’ captain Jamie Langenbrunner and defenseman Bryce Salvador are both “doubtful” for Thursday’s game five against Carolina.  Langenbrunner suffered a “lower body” injury during game two and Salvador injured his knee in game four.

When asked about the availability of the players, coach Brent Sutter was vague, but offered a hint that Salvador is a no-go.  From Fire&Ice

“I thought our five defensemen played extremely well,” Sutter said. ‘I thought the five of them handled it very well. And Greenie will come in and we won’t miss a beat.”

wherein “Greenie” = Andy Greene.
Salvador’s injury occurred near the end of the second period on Tuesday while the Canes were still up 3-0.  A very unpopular Devil, Nic Havelid, had a hand in the play.

Your 2008-2009 Carolina Hurricanes Injury Hogs

I’ve been running Red and Black Hockey since the lockout, and one of the most well-received things I’ve done has been my annual injury hogs.  It’s a little late this season, but they’re here.  This is the third year of the hogs, and by far the least extensive.  To date, Carolina has lost 200 man-games to injury, compared to over 300 in each of the previous two seasons.  17 different players have missed games due to injury or illness, but only four have missed significant time.  With each passing season, the specifics get more and more vague.  What used to be a “fracture of the fourth left metatarsal” became “broken foot”, which has become “lower body”.  Please note that Jussi Jokinen missed four games due to the death of his father and that the NHL strangely counts those in the “man-games lost to injury”.

We’ll start with Justin ”Viva” Williams, who was traded to Los Angeles at the trade deadline, and Scott Walker, who has missed more than half of the season already.  Then we’ll work through the lineup alphabetically.  These should be self-explanatory.

Finally, the truth about Rod.

After months of speculation, finally the truth has come out about Canes captain Rod Brind’Amour.  From today’s online N&O:

Canes coach Paul Maurice said today that team captain Rod Brind’Amour was returning to Raleigh and would not play in the games in San Jose and Phoenix.

Roddy has a nagging injury that’s not getting any better, so we’re sending him back,” Maurice said. “We want him to get some treatment the next four or five days.”

Ward out, Williams maybe in

On Monday, the Hurricanes got a bit of bad news and a bit of good news.

Cam Ward, who left Sunday’s game against the Ducks after the first period has been ruled out for at least a few games.  He has, apparently, suffered a groin injury.  Justin Peters has been called up from Albany to back up Michael Leighton.

The good news is that Justin Viva Williams may play this week, perhaps as early as Thursday against the Penguins.  Williams suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon over the summer and was scheduled to be out for 4-6 months.  He recovered way ahead of schedule and has been practicing with full contact for about a week.

Canes lose at home, injury woes continue

On Saturday, the Hurricanes returned home after a long trip to face a team just starting a long road trip and deep into a losing streak.  Unfortunately for the Canes, Edmonton was able to put an end to their losing ways and the visitors came out with a 3-1 win.  In the process, Canes forward Matt Cullen joined the injury list.  Today is Cully’s 32nd birthday, but he’ll have to spend it in the pressbox with five other injured Canes.

Hurricanes win rough game on the Island

On Saturday, the Hurricanes needed some big-time heroics from goaltender Cam Ward to hang on to a 4-3 victory.  Although he was on the bench for the two previous games, he wasn’t the least bit rusty.  He made 57 saves, including a stop on a penalty shot with less than one second to play in regulation.  He was easily the game’s first star by anyone’s account.  Except, of course, the Islanders radio network, which picks the “official” three stars.  Somehow, they left Ward off the card entirely.  Although the game ended well, it wasn’t all pie and cake for Carolina.

The Hurricanes got off to a good start, pushing off to a 2-0 lead early in the first.  The last time the Hurricanes led a game 2-0 was March 28 of last season in a 7-1 win over the Thrashers.  Throughout the second and third periods, the Canes committed one penalty after another, putting themselves perpetually on the PK.  The good news is that the defense responded well to that, killing seven of eight penalties.  But there was bad news They gave up a shorthanded goal, and they lost two players to injury.

Canes fall to Kings, lose Kaberle

On Friday, the Hurricanes began their annual late October two week road trip in Los Angeles.  After giving up the game’s first goal, then taking a 3-1 lead in the second, Carolina ended up losing in overtime 4-3.  Carolina also lost defenseman Frantisek Kaberle to injury.
At 6:37 of the second frame, Kaberle hobbled off the bench and to the Canes locker room.  He didn’t return to action, and the initial report was that he had suffered a fracture in his foot after blocking a shot.  He is expected to miss two to four weeks.  It’s very early in the season, but already Carolina has nine man-games lost to injury.  Tonight’s injury scratches will raise that number to 13.
Eric Staal was also injured in that game, enough to keep him out of practice on Saturday.  However, he is expected to extend his consecutive games streak to 259 tonight against the Ducks

Carolina begins road journey

On Friday, the Hurricanes will play the first of six straight road games, and they’ll have to do it with yet another forward on the shelf.
When Carolina visits Los Angeles tonight at 10:30, they’ll most likely be doing it without Tuomo Ruutu.  He missed most of the pre-season with a groin issue, and it’s persisted enough for his status to be deemed “doubtful”.
Ruutu makes three top nine wingers on the injured list.  There will be a lot of line juggling, and Chad “Sharpie” LaRose was practicing with the top line on Thursday, so he might get a chance to do that in game action.  Patrick Eaves, who started the season on the top line, has found his way into Peter Laviolette’s doghouse, but there’s no telling how the lines will be made tonight.
Still, this is an opportunity for another young player.

Walker out, no cuts made yet

Today, I expected to hear some news about final cuts made to the Hurricanes roster.  Instead, I came home to learn that forward Scott Walker will be out of the lineup for the next six weeks.  Walker, who has become more of a hothead with every passing month, injured his left hand in a fight during last Sunday’s preseason game in PhillyHe had surgery today and will miss the first quarter of the season.

Things were starting to look a little better on the injury front, but this will throw a wrench in the opening night plans.

No cuts have been made, and the roster stands at 28, but free agent tryout Dan LaCouture was signed to a two-way one-year contract today.  The 31-year old has played in a total of 326 NHL games with five different teams, and has been out of the NHL since 2006-07.  According to all reports, he came into camp in terrific shape and has impressed the coaches all along.

At this point, anyone’s guess is just as good as mine, but here’s my updated projections for the opening night lines:

Tanabe saga continues

All summer long, there has been a wild and crazy soap opera with the Hurricanes and injured defenseman David Tanabe.  First, the Canes tried to buy out his contract.  Tanabe, and the NHLPA objected on the grounds of injury.  The buyout was invalidated and for now, Tanabe must be listed as a roster player.  As a “roster player”, Tanabe is expected to show up for camp.  At the vey least, so he can be evaluated by team doctors.  According to Chip Alexander, Tanabe was a no-show for the physicals yesterday and for the official opening of camp today.

Justin Williams to miss 4-6 months

On Wednesday, the Hurricanes got some horrible news.  Justin Williams has torn his right Achilles tendon and will miss four to six months.  According to the News and Observer, Williams suffered the injury in an off-ice workout and should miss the majority of the season.
