This Needed No Scars, But Heatley Can Still Heal It

What if this whole Heatley situation had been different? Would there have been hope for a better ending, even if that ending saw #15 heading away from our nation’s capital?

It’s hard to imagine a situation much worse than this, nor timing more impeccably wrong. But there were options for Heatley. There’s till time to let both him and Murray walk away with some sense of hope, and for his parents to breathe a little easier.

I’ve had a fried brain over this for a good while now, and it was bound to come out, scrambled in my head as it’s been. It’s become far too personal.

From my Time at the Draft

It’s been a whirlwind few days here in Montreal for me, an incredible experience being around the teams we love, the media who keep us in the loop, and the players we’ll soon be cheering (or jeering) for years to come.

A few last thoughts for the day, for the Senators, for what faces the media, and just for the fun of it.

NHL Draft - Day Two

Six more rounds after the four hour overtime of the first, and still enough buzz to keep you guessing. I’ll be here all day, sanity not guaranteed.

KK at the Draft Floor

How long can they stay quiet? When will the deals, and there are sure to be some, come out of the woodwork? It’s time for a long day of men and boys who play different games, all dressed up in so many suits. I’ll let you know below whatever I can about today.

What You Won’t Find On Any Draft Breakdown

As the afternoon buzzed away today, rumours flying everywhere, there was a quieter, gentler setting for a few of the top prospects at this year’s draft. Tavares, Hedman, Duchene, Kane, Schenn, and Despres where whisked away from the luncheon to the mainland and the Canadiens’ practice rink, joining a couple dozen young and very fortunate hockey players for some practice time.

It’s the story no one might care about, but the story that I’ll take to heart anyway.

NHL Draft-mas Eve

One day away awaits one of the deepest crops of prospects in years. The posters of Patrick Kane and Sidney Crosby are long gone from the bright city of Montreal, but a quiet excitement sizzles in the air. I will be here for it all, and bring you as much as I can these next few days, with anything interesting coming straight to you below.

KK at the NHL Draft

As exciting as the trade deadline is for its instant feedback, good or bad, the next week is the full spread for hockey fans, combining an exciting look forward to the stars and steals of the future at the NHL Draft, followed by the tune-ups and overhauls of free agency.

Starting on Thursday, I will be in Montreal, covering the Draft for KK. Ever wonder what it’s like? It will be my first time as well. Curious who’s talking and who’s listening? Wonder how the polish of the first-rounders compare to the different but equally tense reactions of the guys wondering when and if they will be called? I’ll be your eyes and ears as best I can, so feel free to let me know in the comments what you are curious about; I’ll have plenty of time to catch up when my eleven hour bus trip starts Wednesday morning.

Not Really Much of a Shake-Up

Earlier today, as posted by Paul, the Ottawa Senators announced the formation of a new executive team “that will be responsible for the club’s operations and the diverse range of assets managed by Senators Sports & Entertainment.”

Conveniently timed, in the wake of news about Heatley’s request for a trade? Sure, especially since the team won’t take over until July 1st, providing little need for the announcement to come on any particular date. But what does it really mean? Honestly, not much.

Senators’ Off-Season Already Heating Up

You must have heard by now that Heatley’s asking for a trade. I had my skepticism when ESPN initially reported it (KK); can you really know the lady you don’t take to the dance?

But TSN confirmed. Let the speculation and chatter begin.

Hunt Departs

From the Regina Leader-Post,

The Leader-Post has learned through sources close to the situation that the WHL club has found its new/old head coach—Curtis Hunt. A media conference is slated for either today or Tuesday at the Brandt Centre to announce the three-year contract, which hasn’t yet been signed—but the sides have agreed to terms.

Pats GM Brent Parker couldn’t be immediately reached for comment.
....
Parker made a formal offer on the weekend and the deal was subsequently consummated—according to another source—after Hunt officially parted company with the Ottawa Senators, informing them that he wouldn’t return next season as the head coach of their AHL affiliate in Binghamton.

Not at all surprising, and he can’t be blamed for his choice, especially after the runaround he’s been through. Binghamton has been clamoring for the playoffs longer than Ottawa, and for signs that the farm club is on Ottawa’s radar. With a fresh start, the direction the Murrays take will be especially telling of what’s in store for the Binghamton Senators, and their rocky relationship as the Senators’ AHL affiliate.
