Pondering The Near-Pointless End

Slowly but surely, the end draws near, fourteen games away from an unusually long summer.

Head turns left, thinks about jumping on bandwagons, turns right, thinks about offseason possibilities.

Still, the only desired thought is that of a good ol’ hockey game.

Senators Soldier On

It wasn’t pretty, it’s not the kind of play you want to be remembered for, especially against the League’s second worst team, even if you’re down in the pit too, but the Senators will take this 3-2OT win over Tampa and enjoy it for all the 21 hours they could.

Boston might not be so easy to coax into rolling over and playing dead. The Senators themselves seem intent on showing everyone that they are anything but.

Stick It To ‘Em

Tonight, the Lightning visit Ottawa, and with Senators killer Gary Roberts now retired, it’s as though every trick in the bag has been pulled out to suck away meaning and intensity from this game.

Neil might get to put some back in, and maybe a little something extra as well, but as luck would have it, much of the chatter still revolves around something as simple as the shape of the blade of Jason Spezza’s stick.

Rest assured, it is either illegal, or the rules will be interpreted in such a way as to make it illegal. Yes, even I am taking that side.

Dusting Off An Oldie

It’s the simple things in life, really, and there’s no simple joy greater than beating the Leafs, by a single goal (2-1), in front of the home town non-sellout crowd.

Ok, so it wasn’t perfect, so Gerber didn’t start, so Wilson dusted off his rule book in the dying minutes, but let’s look past that to the ‘W’ for now.

Gerber, Leafs Roll Into Ottawa

The Battle of Ontario resumes tonight, even as it is hard to call it a battle when neither team looks poised to make the playoffs, when the past few days have seen a couple thousand tickets still available. Even if it is denied on all counts at all levels, at least among the fans it is a battle for the opposite end of the standings.

With just one look, you can see who’s gearing up to go. The Sens traded away a first round pick to acquire a promising puck moving defenseman in Campoli, and a potential top six forward in Comrie. The Leafs traded away a pair of their more promising forwards, and after Gerber saw his career all but wash away in Ottawa, sent down to the AHL, he now finds himself in blue and white. On TSN, an interview saw Gerber describing his time in Ottawa as “a bad marriage.”

Ok, maybe there just might be room for some battle tonight.

Oilers Make Sens Look Slick

Ok, so when I said that it was Ottawa’s turn to play spoiler this season, I did not necessarily have it in mind that we would be spoiling the playoff hopes of a fellow Canadian team, let alone one I might find myself rooting for come mid-April (my playoff allegiances are a complex lot, and will be challenged earlier than ever this year).

A powerful 4-2 win over Edmonton would normally be reason to cheer, or at least cheer for more than the moment. But it is a strange place to be, thinking of what lies ahead. After 11 straight years of playoffs, I’m not quite sure how to deal with this, let alone how other franchises have gotten by.

Murray’s Moves, Fans’ Shakes

The dust has settled, did you get what you wanted?

The Senators feel they got things they’ve been craving, but at the same time, the fans just don’t seem to be buying it yet, with worry befitting these tough economic times.

Lack Of Deadline Focus Dooms Sens

A 6-3 loss to Calgary, division basement losing to another division’s leader; no surprise there, especially with all the buzz surrounding several Ottawa players. Spezza dropping the gloves for a questionable Phaneuf hit on Heatley ranks as the biggest surprise, that an ill Auld was pulled after three weak goals over two periods was not.

Schubert got showcased, Kuba potted his second goal of the season, and now we are just about ready to believe any fanciful rumour that crosses our screen these last six hours before all moves have been made.

Flames Bring The Pressure, Deadline The Excitement

Tonight, the Senators will host the Flames, once again longing to show that they have what it takes to compete with top teams, hopeful of a quick rebound that has been slow in coming, after last year’s playoff sweep.

Admit it though, the closest interest you have to this game is to see who is and who isn’t playing, be they in the press box or on a plane.

Senators Still Stumped On Trades

Have you picked up some beer and nachos yet? Set up televisions side by side to compare coverage?

T-minus 55 hours or so until all the cards will be on the table. Question is, will the Senators get to play any?
