Alfie To Undergo Knee Surgery

From Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen,

Ottawa Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right knee, the team announced Friday.

The news comes as a shock - on the eve of Saturday’s visit by the defending Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings. Alfredsson, the toast of Sweden during the club’s opening two games to the season, wasn’t available for comment Friday morning.

The Senators said the surgery is designed to remove a bone chip in his right knee that was dislodged during Sunday’s 3-1 win over the Penguins.

He is expected to miss three to four weeks.

The Senators’ captain will be missed, but hopefully with discipline, the team can rally around each other to keep their heads up until Alfie returns after what we can only hope will be a speedy recovery.

Update - 12:45pm

More details on the situation from Murray and Hartsburg, the new top line, and Fisher will play Saturday.

from Bruce Garrioch of Sun Media,

GM Bryan Murray said Alfredsson isn’t projected to be out more than two weeks.

“It’s not a long-term thing. It’s something that happened in Stockholm,” said Murray. “We were told he could probably go forward with it, but it should be removed. He will miss the home opener, but probably not much more."…

Coach Craig Hartsburg said Alfredsson might have aggravated an old injury.

“Every team is going to go through it. You miss good players,” said Hartsburg. “We need to be a team, certainly we will miss Alfie. This is a great opportunity for us to prove we are different (and that) this is a team."…

There was some good news today, however. Centre Mike Fisher will return from a groin injury for the game Saturday night. Jarkko Ruutu will skate with Heatley and Spezza.

“We lose a good player and we’re getting a good player back,” said Hartsburg.

Heatley will wear the ‘C’ while Alfredsson is sidelined. “Dany’s approach has been great. This is a chance for him to step up,” said Hartsburg.

Two weeks instead of three to four is indeed an improvement, though lets hope his speedy return isn’t accompanied with the obvious discomfort he showed when he returned during Ottawa’s four game sweep at the hands of Pittsburgh in last season’s playoffs.

Complete speculation, but with Heatley wearing the ‘C’ tomorrow, I would imagine Fisher will wear an ‘A’, though with guys like Smith, and Kelly (who wore the ‘C’ during a preseason game), you never know. Ruutu on the first line? Now this should be very interesting. Good defensive sensibilities, and if someone’s trying to pester Heatley and Spezza, they’ll get it right back.

Fully addicted to hockey, I find it safe to live in the alleys, considering my allegiance to the Ottawa Senators in the middle of Leaf County. I try to bring you as many worthwhile Sens stories as I can find, along with my musings on the team and the NHL in general; musings indeed since I am but a humble hobo in the land of men.
