Via TSN text message,
Barry Melrose has been fired as head coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning
I’m not any more a fan of Tampa than most other franchises, but I will mourn the loss of yet another bold coaching personality. And the hair.
Update
As posted quite clearly just above, Rick Tocchet is the new head coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning. How much change that will bring to the Bolts’ fortunes remains to be seen.

Oh, and wouldn’t it be hilarious if they hired Torts back?

Well, I guess this frees him for a Steel Cage Match with Brian Burke for the Toronto GM job!

If I was grading it I’d say….
Coach Melrose C
GM Lawton D
Ownership F
I mean trading Boyle was asinine

Kevin, I actually agree. I mean, I do think the game has passed the Mullet by (as far as being anything more than an average NHL coach), but ownership pretty much ensured that he’d fail.

They’ll hire Paul Maurice (ex Toronto) next…young, solid…and with talent (unlike Toronto) in front of him will be GREAT!

Someone always has to take the fall.

Un-f*cking-believable.
No patience at all. As much as I rag on Melrose, I think he should’ve been given more time to work with this team. It’s one thing to make changes but making them in a reckless manner is just comical.

Didn’t we all see this coming before the first puck of the preseason was even dropped? Wonder if ESPN will take him back. Hate to say it, but even the Mullet was better on ESPN than Matthew Barnaby has been.
