Hearts go out to man of compassion

From the Ottawa Sun, on the status of team doctor Don Chow,

There is only one injury that currently concerns the Senators, and that’s to popular team doctor Don Chow.
[...]
“He’s obviously an important member of our staff,” said Murray. “Our thoughts and prayers are with him on a daily basis.

“He’s been (with the team) a long time, but the most important thing is he’s a friend. He’s a very caring person. He’s helped every one of us, in one way or another. He takes time on a regular basis to do whatever is necessary for the team, the team members. From a personal point of view, my wife had surgery, and he didn’t do the surgery, but he was the one calling on a regular basis and offering support, help and advice. When a person cares that much, you miss him as part of your team, but again, we know what his family must be going through while we wait for him to recover. We’re going to miss him a great deal on the first day of training camp.”

Not the news I was expecting to start a fresh September with, but no question about where all sympathies are right now.

When you think of the Senators, you think of Daniel Alfredsson, without question. You have lost track of how many coaches have been through this town since the lockout, of how many General Managers have tried to excel within the cap or stay afloat when the dollar was low, of how many goalies and offensive plugs have been stuffed into the good ship Senators’ holes, only to pop back out. Yet where might the team be without Dr. Chow, more tenured a Senator than even Alfie himself?

Some still sting at the loss of the shot-blocking machine, but for all that the big Russian bear has played through, would the A-train have been back on the bench with such a reliable instant repair without the man who has been with the team since its re-inception as an expansion franchise? The speed of Alfie’s recovery from everything from arthroscopic knee surgery to broken jaws and everything in between has been miraculous, but how Wolverine-like would his legend be without Dr. Chow, there from the moment a body hits the ice until the last symptoms of recovery are but a distant memory?

In today’s game, where loyalties change as flippantly as the wind, and every detail about an injury is cannon fodder for 29 hungry packs of wolves, how much do you value nearly two decades of steadfast dedication? How much trust do you expect there to be in a doctor who not only takes care of his players, but plays the game himself (as a goalie), and offers advice on family health as well?

Hidden perpetually behind a curtain, the Wizard of Oz — Dr. Chow — is front and center in everyone’s hearts and thoughts, and the only one who’ll be there today.
