Heatley Gets An ‘A’

From the Ottawa Citizen,

Dany Heatley has talked a lot about doing more for the Ottawa Senators than just score goals.

He’s about to get that chance.

In a surprise decision, given the number of veteran players there are on the team, coach Craig Hartsburg has picked Heatley to be one of his assistant captains.

Chris Phillips, who wore an A last year, will wear it again this year, while Daniel Alfredsson, of course, remains the captain.

I think it’s an interesting point of debate. Technically, you are right, and in the military and other places, it makes sense to only have one leader.

To me, ‘alternate’ makes it sound like the way I think of and apply it to jerseys: you can wear a home, away, or alternate jersey, but always only one jersey.

To me, the ‘A’s should be assistants in spirit, since you can’t always look to one man to lead and inspire the team to right the ship; there are times when you need more voices and views than that.

And, to pardon my own inquisition into such a separate frivolous matter, but isn’t “Raith” supposed to be “Wraith”? *sheepish smile*

Alternate does seem to indicate “instead of” while assistant seems to mean “in addition to.”  I have heard commentators (including experienced ones) use alternate and assistant interchangably - even coaches.

Seems kind of like how it always used to be “hockey sweater” and now even players often call them “jerseys” - probably because of the fabric as much as anything else.  They are fancy performace fabrics like other sports instead of a knitted sweater now.

The English language is so fluid and adaptable.  smile
