From the Ottawa Senators’ website,
Ottawa Senators general manager Bryan Murray announced today the club has signed right-winger Ryan Shannon to a one-year contract.
Shannon appeared in 35 games for the Senators this season, posting National Hockey League career highs with eight goals and 12 assists. He recorded five multi-point games, including his first career two-goal game on Feb. 17 in Ottawa’s 3-2 overtime loss at Colorado.
It was bound to happen, and represents a good first step for the offseason.
Updated
Over an 82-game season, Shannon projected to a 19-28—47 season, very respectable numbers to help the Senators in pushing their offence back up after a significant drop. Shannon had mentioned his desire to be a fulltime NHLer, and that he should be signed because, in his words, he is “cheap labour,” leading me to speculate that this could be a one-year deal for no more than $1 million, and as a potentially underpriced one-year tryout could be lower still, giving Shannon a chance to show his durability as a 5’9, 173lbs forward.
Had to post it, but no, the hiatus isn’t yet up, another week or so left until that point, when the review begins in earnest.
Update - 5:40 AM EST
According to the Ottawa Sun, while Shannon’s RFA status meant that Murray could have offered him a qualifying offer of a $660,000 two-way deal, Shannon forfeited roughly 9% of that to sign a one-year, one-way deal worth $600,000. It won’t cause any headaches for next season, but it will be interesting to see where an impressive 82-game season by Shannon and a cap number that is expected to contract sharply after next season will leave him and the team.
