Sens Lose, Ruutu Breaks Pun Machine

From the Ottawa Citizen, on Ottawa’s 4-2 loss in Buffalo,
Welcome back to the weird and wacky world of life between the Ottawa Senators and Buffalo Sabres, where anything and everything goes.
There was plenty of controversy, lots of action and many choice words from both sides following the latest episode.
In the end, it was same old sorry result for the Senators in their sad season, a 4-2 defeat which ran their losing streak to three games, left them with 15 losses in their past 16 games away from Scotiabank Place, including a 1-5-1 stretch on the current road trip.
....
At least the Senators showed some life in a game that featured a spirited, albeit failed, comeback attempt and allegations that Senators pest Jarkko Ruutu bit Sabres heavyweight Andrew Peters on the right thumb.
You can find a replay of the incident posted by Paul. I can only imagine what really went on: pretty clear that Ruutu at least didn’t rip Peters’ glove off; Peters ripped his hand out of it. Colin Campbell will reportedly look into it, and I’m sure more video will emerge. Even I’m impressed that today’s hockey gloves allow teeth to break skin through them; maybe that glove should have been held by officials as evidence. Peters didn’t need stiches, and played more in the game after the incident than prior to it, so he obviously wasn’t hurting too bad. Can’t say I want biting in the game, just as much as I’ll leave this in Campbell’s and Hartsburg’s hands today.
Right, there was a ‘rest of the game’, involving Auld giving up a goal 15 seconds in off a bad turnover, a 3-0 lead emerging five minutes into the second, and Spezza notching both a fluke bounce-off-Miller goal and a breakaway goal 32 seconds apart to make a game of it. Even managed some good chances, before an empty-netter sealed the deal.
The Sens sit fourth in the lottery standings, but don’t let that fool you: they have a game in hand on 3rd and 5th, and three in hand against the top two contenders in Atlanta and the Isles.
There’s a big snowfall in Ottawa; looks like Donovan might get to collect his winning bet from Alfredsson, Canada having beated Sweden in the World Juniors. Alfie will have to shovel Donovan’s outdoor skating rink. With just a shovel.
If only the whole team could get involved in this heavy lifting. The Sens have found ways to beat top teams previously; Boston will be such a challenge on Thursday. If the Sens are so lost that instinct and the munchies are taking over strategic thought, Atlanta and Long Island may soon find they’ve got someone hot on their heels.
