Something’s Poking Me; I Can Almost Feel It

I’ll admit that I’m not normally a weekend poster. The morning before a game with the Isles certainly doesn’t look to break that trend.

But then, a glimmer of some fire to put under the Senators’ bench, and I can’t resist. Impressive, Islanders; I didn’t think you had it in you.

From the Ottawa Sun,

Islanders coach Scott Gordon is crediting a Feb. 20 trade with the Senators as part of the reason why his team has played better of late.

Not so much the addition of Dean McAmmond, but the departure of Chris Campoli and Mike Comrie.

“You know we had a couple of bad apples, too, that we got rid of,” Gordon was recently quoted as saying in Newsday by Mark Herrmann. “As a result of that, the chemistry in the locker room is what you would expect from a team that pulls together.”

Heading into last night’s game against the Carolina Hurricanes, the 30th-place Islanders were 7-3-2 since the trade with Ottawa and 6-2-1 since veteran Bill Guerin was dealt to the Penguins.

Gordon has repeatedly said he had no problem with Guerin.
....
Campoli has readily admitted that, like Gilligan, he wanted off the Island.

“In my opinion, the situation wasn’t great,” said the 24-year-old defenceman. “I felt I needed a change and they accommodated me. It didn’t get ugly. I know (Islanders GM) Garth Snow well. We’ve got a good relationship. I’ve got a lot of respect for him. I guess he felt he could move on, too, and we found a situation that worked for both of us. I’m thrilled to be here and be an Ottawa Senator.”

Ok, so maybe not the harshest words, they won’t be making the news alongside Cherry, Ovechkin, and Crosby, but it’s a nice little jab from a team whose jabbing stick has looked as sharp as an inflatable novelty baseball bat this season. Still, I’ll take anything to add a little spice, whatever it takes to prevent a sweep at the hands of the Isles tonight. I can’t blame Campoli for wanting off an Island where he wasn’t having much success and was being pushed further and further down the depth chart, as if he were some past-his-prime vet that could never recover. Eight points in thirteen games as a Senator says he’s got more than he was able to show on Long Island.

And speaking of Ovechkin, and his 50th goal celebration, there’s been plenty of mixed reaction. Apparently, very mixed, from the same Ottawa Sun article,

If you missed it, the great Capitals winger dropped his stick, then hovered his hands around it, as though it was too hot to touch.

Said Chris Kelly: “He’s got to rub his hands together. I understand what his concept is, but he’s got to rub his hands, like keeping them warm. Just like that, no one understood what was going on. If I scored 50 goals, I would do something like that, too.

....Said Nick Foligno: “I don’t really think it’s that big a deal. If you score, it’s exciting. It’s hard to do in this league. You obviously don’t try to embarrass the other team, but if you’re excited and you worked hard to get that goal, you should show some excitement. Obviously, my dad (Mike) did the jump. Maybe the game has changed a little bit, but I think it’s nice when guys show emotion.”

Said Daniel Alfredsson: “Maybe a little much, but I like his thinking.”

You tell ‘em, Kelly, you tell ‘em. If anyone else this season scores 50 and didn’t like Ovechkin’s jest, they can set the appropriate tone.

....oh wait, it’s quite likely that Ovechkin will be the only player to reach 50, the Devils’ Parise being closest with 41. If only one player is going to score 50 in a season, I sure as heck want to see some emotion, or has the League decided that it doesn’t like goals, that they aren’t important? Can we get some Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man pads for the goalies next season?
