Sidney Crosby Named Canada’s Male Athlete of the Year
by Tony on 12/30/10 at 07:12 PM ET
Comments (1)
From the Toronto Globe and Mail’s Chris Johnston:
Sidney Crosby’s entire year was defined by a split second at the end of February.
In the time it took the superstar forward to deftly corral Jarome Iginla’s pass and beat Ryan Miller between the legs, Crosby put an exclamation mark on the Vancouver Olympics and secured a spot in Canadian hockey lore. Not only did his overtime goal against the Americans clinch the men’s hockey gold medal for Canada, it sent the entire country into a jubilant frenzy on the final day of the Games.

Tangradi Embracing Ability as Power Forward
by Tony on 12/30/10 at 07:07 PM ET

From NHL.com’s A.J. Atchue:
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton forward Eric Tangradi may only be 21 years old, but he’s already experienced a rollercoaster ride’s worth of emotions in his young hockey career.
For someone who was raised just outside of Philadelphia and grew up as a Flyers fan, not least among those emotions was the February 2009 trade which sent him from the Anaheim Ducks organization to the Flyers’ bitter cross-state rival, the Pittsburgh Penguins.
It isn’t easy getting people back home to turn in their Flyers orange for Penguins black and gold, but Tangradi is giving it his best shot anyway. “My parents and family were pretty easy to turn over to the Pittsburgh side, but my friends in Philly, I still haven’t gotten them on board quite yet,” he said. “Hopefully if I can make Pittsburgh a permanent home, that might get them to change their minds.”

Crosby’s Point Streak Halted at 25 Games
by Tony on 12/30/10 at 10:56 AM ET
Comments (15)
Penguins captain Sidney Crosby failed to score a point in the Pens’ lackluster 2-1 shootout loss to the New York Islanders in Long Island, stopping his point streak at 25 games.
That makes two straight disappointing road losses against teams the Penguins should beat, sandwiching the 6-3 home win against Thrashers that I attended on Tuesday night.
It was just one of those games for Crosby last night, including not only hitting the post early in the game, but having the puck bounce off his stick several times in the Isles’ zone.

U.S. Seizes Fake Jerseys Ahead of NHL Winter Classic
by Tony on 12/29/10 at 04:00 PM ET

From Reuters Canada:
U.S. authorities said on Wednesday they have seized shipments of counterfeit souvenirs, including National Hockey League jerseys ahead of the league’s Winter Classic game this weekend between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Washington Capitals.
In the past month authorities in Pittsburgh scanned incoming packages for counterfeit goods and intercepted shipments from overseas of almost 800 fake items. The counterfeits included NHL and National Football League jerseys, hats, T-shirts and other souvenirs worth an estimated $100,000, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency said.
Pittsburgh is hosting the Winter Classic game between the Penguins and Capitals on Saturday, New Year’s Day. The teams will play a rare outdoor game on an ice rink set up on the field of a professional football stadium, Heinz Field.
